Listening to McCartney II. For both the first and the last time... I'm going to need something cleansing after this. I occasionally read some of the Beatles threads here, and some seemed excited that he played Temporary Secretary recently. Now that I've heard it I'm even more confused than before.
The Doobie Brothers, "The Doctor." Music is the doctor of my soul. Some would say this is a "China Grove" re-write. I would say that you would have to be able to write "China Grove" in the first instance to get to this one. Genius. There's a healing in those guitars And a spirit in the song No matter what condition your rhythm is in The message goes on and on "Black Water," what a great song! I liked this when I was a little kid, like in third of fourth grade or something like that, probably younger. My friend's mom told me I couldn't like it. She had it playing on the radio and I said, "I like this song." She was like, you can't like this song, it's bad for you to like this song, blah, blah, blah. I wasn't upset about it, I was just like WTF? But this was before people said that. This is where I started to learn that adults were flawed and ridiculous people. I told my Mom later and she said, "Oh, don't listen to her."
Someone called this album the Sgt. Pepper of metal, but I do not really see that one. Because I love this album. Naw, joking aside, I totally see what was meant by that statement. It's the kind of album that breaks rules, erases borders and also creates new rules. Too bad it is hard to find on cd with the original running order (they switched the running order of side 1 and 2) but that can easily be fixed with programming the bastard.
Speaking of childhood memories, The Doobie Brothers’ appearance on the sitcom What’s Happening in the ‘70s was my introduction to to concept of bootleg recordings: 40 Years Ago: The Doobie Brothers Appear on 'What's Happening!!' It’s funny the things that stick with you as a kid.
LOL. I love "Temporary Secretary". McCartney II is one of my favorites. I feel that Macca is at his best when he is experimenting, taking chances, and not worrying about being in the top 40. But different strokes for different folks and all that.
Ry Cooder - Show Time Tete Montoliu - Catalonian Folksongs - Solo Piano Mozart's Piano Concertos 12 & 14 (K. 414 and 449) Jimmy Raney and Zoot Sims - Two Jims and Zoot Oscar Peterson - The Trio The Byrds - Untitled Mahler's 10th Symphony Amos Garrett - Get Way Back The Rice Brothers 2 Speaking of the Doobies, anybody been to BR Cohn's winery in Sonoma County? He's the Doobies' manager, has some of their memorabilia on his winery's walls and a nice outdoor picnic area on the property.
I had to listen to VH's "House Of Pain" for the 1984 thread. All the original VH albums are short, so those threads are like happy parties that end too quickly. I just put this on:
Angel Olsen - My woman Lydia Loveless - Real Dori Freeman - s/t Brent Cobb - Shine on rainy day Newish indie/rock/alt/country
Marc Benno's first three solo records. A friend of mine recommended him yesterday. I'm not even sure that I knew the name before. Good american music! A few songs will be added to my road trip compilation
Other than the title track and Kings & Queens there's not much to write home about with this album.... IMO
