Nos. 35 and 36 this morning. Fantastic. Mozart: Symphonies 29, 31, 32, 35, & 36. Sir Charles Mackerras, Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Linn.
@George P any favorite recordings of Davidsbundlertanze? This multifaceted work seems to be quite tricky to find someone that plays all the small pieces with the contrast it requires.
Pablo Gonzalez Barcelona Symphony Orchestra Bizet: Carmen Suites; L'Arlesienne Suites Naxos, 2017 Not enough interest in these performances for me.
This is a wonderful recording. The performances are excellent and the recorded sound is great. Gabriel Schwabe is a master in my opinion. I ordered this a few weeks ago, but they were sold out. It arrived yesterday. The review in Gramophone hints that this could be the top recording of these works. That is easy for me to believe. I was only able to find one PD label recording on Andromeda for online sampling (I did like what I heard), if you know of a specific disc I'll keep my eyes open. I'll post up what I thought of a few different interpretations later this weekend.
Davidsbundlertanze- after listening to several the stand out for me was Kempff's 1967 DGG recording, superb interpretation and he captures all its facets nicely. I was not expecting this since I don't really associate Kempff to excel at Schumann. I also liked Arrau, Kempff was just slightly better. Not one of Cortot's stronger Schumann pieces, just never approaching the heights of others or his other Schumann recordings. Gieseking (Andromeda PD label, virtually no information about it besides "recorded 1938-1947) was also fine.
This is the second Adam Fischer recording of Mahler in this series. It could turn out to be one of the good ones. Adam Fischer Dusseldorf Symphony Orchestra Mahler: Symphony No. 4 Avi, 2017
Symphonies 5 and 6: Sir Charles Mackerras: Scottish Chamber Orchestra. The Beethoven Symphonies, live from the Edinburgh Festival. Hyperion / recorded by the BBC.
These are classic recordings in excellent sound overall. Early copies had distortion and other anomalities on a few tracks on three or four of the CDs, but that has been rectified, so buying it now should be safe.
Thanks for getting back. I thought I saw some earlier comments somewhere about these Eurodisc recordings that the SQ is somewhat spotty ...
Yes, it sounds excellent. I like the remastering more than my original Olympia/Alto CDs, the Sony remastering adds some depth and dimension to the piano sound. There were defective box sets with some distortion on some of the discs with the first pressing run. JPC have the corrected box and it is also pretty cheap there.
Since the box has been on the market for a while, all the defective sets should have been gone by now ...
