This is disgusting. I applied a minute amount of WD40 to a rusty padlock the day before yesterday and still can't get that smell off my hands.

It’s remarkable how such a simple task has so many nutty ideas on how to do it better. I don’t know how many of those YouTube video are serious but people certainly take them seriously.

When I got started I watched them, made my own home brew cleaner and spent hours hand cleaning records. Anything other then a spinclean or RCM used as directed is a fools errand.

You took words right out of my mouth. I cannot believe how many videos on YouTube that has all sorts of really horrible advice regarding turntables and records in general. I even come across a couple videos that say that RCM's are a total scam/useless. Totally unreal.

  10. WD40 will clean a lot of stuff from a lot of other stuff - for example it removes permanent marker pen from most surfaces. However -it does leave behind a slippery residue because that's its main purpose. You'd have to wash it off the record pretty quick. Maybe you could use as a last resort but it hardly seems worth the bother.

Leave the WD40 on for a few years and it will be interesting to see what damage it does to the vinyl.

I’m game, can we use your stylus to check the results?

No, it's petroleum based. Should not be used indoors, and certainly not around people with respiratory ailments.

It's just like playing records wet, except with more chemicals.

The same guy repeated the experiment with distilled water, and the result was nearly identical:

    Wood glue or bust.

I hate to think what WD-40 would do to a stylus.

My son is an exploration geologist.

The mechanic who cares for the drill rigs has a saying:

"If it moves and shouldn't - Duct Tape, if it doesn't move and should - WD40"

Pretty nifty tool box, but record cleaning, no thanks!!
