I haven't read through all 2200 pages of this thread but I assume we all figured out that 1985 really was the goods. It's the year that I keep going back to for the surprises and the energy - especially in the first sets. Here's a very on fire first set I just heard for the first time not long ago from 3/25/85 Springfield, MA. Cheers!

This is really embarrassing, but I think I was wrong (close! but wrong). As I was alllllllmost off to sleep last night, a voice in the back of my brain said, "Dude, that wasn't the O'Jays riff, it was the Sly & The Family Stone's 'Thank You (Falettin Me Be Mice Elf Agin)' riff from five years earlier."

    I said, "Dude, no way."
Voice said, "Yeah, pretty sure. They are very close variations on the same basic three-note idea."
Me: I can't get up and check it right now.
Voice: Play it in your head.
Me: ... Crap. Where were you 45 minutes ago before I got all pronouncement-like?
    Voice: <shrug> That's how I roll.

Here's Sly's riff. What do you think? I think *that* may actually be Shakedown's spiritual godfather based on what we hear in this PITB. Still pretty cool.

20 minutes of some of the best jamming ive ever heard. Jerry totally botches all the lyrics but tge playibg after the song "ends" is just....

    Holy crap.

Everybody needs this in their lives.

Kind of like the 30 minute Eyes from 3/31. Jerry played much better with the Hornsby around.

I thought you went to the Pine Knob shows in 91?

To be fair there are several cities in the area with either Hills or Heights - Rochester Hills, Sterling Heights, Madison Heights... Come to think of it, there are a lot of decent sized venues in the area - Meadowbrook, Freedom Hill, Pine Knob, the Palace.... etc.

I'm not going to actively diss '85, but this is funny. Wasn't that year part of the @Archtop live era? Respect must be accorded.

Nice. I was in my first year or two of college and a random package from my dad came in the mail with Greyfolded. That was a good surprise!
I've always had a strong preference for D1 over D2. I'd be interested in other opinions.

Judging from my previous adventures through this long run of shows, my favorite moment of the entire 9-show '91 MSG run is the Foolish Heart from 9/12/91. The jam out of Terrapin on 9/18/91 also very good.

I made a couple of compilations around about 2003 of what I considered the best stuff from that run. Except for the "Jams" compilation, nothing was included from 9/10 and 9/13, because you should get those shows in their entirety. 9/16 was a keeper as well it seems. These lists below might horrify some completists, so you may want to keep on scrollin'...

Hmm.. I will need to go back and listen to these. Memphis from 9/9 must have been really good, can't imagine why it would be there otherwise.

Working my way through 2/9/73 this morning, good fun for a Friday with the debut of the Wall of Sound prototype and a whole batch of new tunes! "Here Comes Sunshine"! "Eyes"!.

First set got off to a rocky start when they blew all the tweeters on the wall, but they recovered pretty quickly and give us a solid, if unexceptional first set for most of it. However, there are a few exceptions. The "Loose Lucy" debut is fire and serves as a nice counterpoint to the cowboy tunes. The real meat of this set starts with that "Sunshine" debut, ain't nothin' tentative or rough about this one. It's ready to go night one. "PITB" carries things on nicely to end the set, especially the interplay between Phil and Jerry when the jam section starts, Jerry's flitting around like a punch-drunk bumblebee.

    Bring on the second set...

At the point they stop playing "Row Jimmy" as a reggae tune (assuming they ever did so live, I think the reason I know it was a reggae number is because of Wake), what did they play it as? Sometimes it sounds vaguely reggae, but otherwise I don't know what they're doing. Listening to the one on 11/10/73.

I'm about halfway through the second set of 2/9/73 now and there are so many things to say about it, especially how absolutely incredible the debut of "Eyes" was/is. However, I want to just take a second to acknowledge, once again, how amazingly flexible this band was. I mean, at the end of that pretty out "Eyes" jam they drop immediately into the "China Doll" debut which has such an aching, heartbreaking vibe. I mean, less than twenty seconds to go from floating in the cosmos to sitting at the end of a dark pier. It's incredible how they could do that. Just incredible. This band.

The "Eyes" debut is notable since while most Dead songs started with brief, first set versions before finding their way to the second set, Garcia and the band apparently conceived "Eyes" from the beginning as a second set jam piece.
