"Get Back On It" almost sounds like it would be a better fit on Everybody's Rockin', not Reactor. It's the only piano based tune on an album full of grungy guitar rockers. Speaking of guitar, Neil gets some great, funky tones out of Old Black on Reactor as well.

It's by no means a great album, you can hear he tossed it off to fulfil contractual obligations. But I love NY and CH when they get bone-headed; Opera Star and Rapid Transit are awesome.

Just listened to this album and, if anything, T-Bone is too short.

I love T-Bone, but I think it is about 2 or 3 minutes too long.

How is Synclavier used on this album?

  8. Not really a great NY&CH album, but a fine listen. Of the albums released during the 1980-1988 period this is probably my favourite, even though it falls short compared to most of what came before.

one of neil young's worst efforts of his early career.

    sounds phoned in.

the only redeeming song is 'southern pacific" and the riff in that one had been around for years.

Compared to "The Visitor" its brilliant, compared to most of the rest of his catalogue its average.

It's in my top five Neil Young albums. Loud electric Crazy Horse all the way through-- This was the punk version and Ragged Glory was the hippie version.

Love the album. I like it when Neil goes off the beaten track a bit. "Shots" is brill, the rest is mos def not. But that doesn't matter much, because as a whole it is so weird and fun.

Yes, indeed. Needs about 20 minutes to melt right, like "Yoo Doo Right" by Can or side 2 of Brainticket's "Cottonwood Hill."

I have a hard time hearing it, but it seems like it bolsters the guitar sounds in places, kind of like how ZZ Top used synths on Eliminator.

First there was an acoustic version of Shots, live, which I personally prefer.

I've always loved that album. Still have my original vinyl copy.

I wouldn't rate T-Bone as one of his better songs - but as filler goes, hey, at least it's loud and obnoxious. :D And pretty much every other song on the album is excellent.

Interesting. Always sounded like all guitars to me.

onlyacanvasky Your guess is as good as mine.

This, along with Hawks and Doves, was some of the first Neil Young I heard properly when I was getting into him in the 90s. (My local library loaned out the records, could you imagine that now?) So I’ve always had an affection for those two records. Maybe I look at them through rose coloured glasses but when the mood strikes, I still love both of those records. And that galloping drum beat of Shots is a hell of a way to close an album.
