    Email from Neko:

My name is Neko Case. I am a music producer, songwriter, and musician. I just finished a record called ‘Hell-On’ with a cast of talented musicians, techs, label folks and friends.

What I want you to know about me isn’t too much, nor do I want to over talk it. What you take away on your own, as a listener is most important. I worked really hard and I was present for every second of this project. Producing a record is a huge task and there were times I was deep in the weeds, but that is normal for a record that takes a year plus. The weeds aren’t so bad. There were a lot of break-through moments, belly-laughs, sleepless nights and grubby, shiny jeans. In the end it was all worth it and I am so proud of how it turned out, and I am so grateful to have worked with such dedicated, giving artists to make it happen.

There were a few challenges during the making of this record from small (scheduling difficulties, and occasional miscommunication) to large (my house burning down while I was overseas.) But none of them are the story of this recording, the songs are the story. They are my best self. They are everything I’ve worked for since I was a kid, whether I knew it or not.

I write songs from a feeling of solidarity with folks who feel alone or isolated, I think I’m trying to comfort people in this way. It’s not a forceful way rather "No commitment necessary;" take it if you want it, take it as you can.

My style is odd, I don’t know what genre this is. I don’t have a pretty voice or a trained voice, and I am constantly disappointed that I don’t have a “tough” voice, no matter how hard I practice, but it’s mine, and for all its loud, heavy-handed, nasal, vibrato-less qualities I accept it. The closest sound I have found to compare it to is Bulgarian Folk singing. My Eastern ancestors could have been proud of me a century ago? I could have been a droning “caller of wasps” perhaps? I just invented that job, I like the sound of it.

The songs are who I believe myself to be and that will change, but for now that’s how it is and I’m very satisfied with that.

I'm new to Neko Case. Her music has depth that I haven't quite figured out yet, but the more I listen the more I like. She really sounds good when I've imbibed. I will be picking up the new one, for sure.

This is the song that turned me on to her:

Woohoo! Her Middle Cyclone album is undoubtedly one of my favorites of 2009, and The Worse Things Get was really, really good. I'm pretty stoked.

Really looking forward to hearing this. She takes her time, but every record she's done over the last 15 years has been wonderful.

    Time flies!

She did record the trio project with k.d. lang and Laura Veirs in the interim -- plus she toured for the last album for a real long time, toured with lang and Veirs and then toured for the box set. She might have recorded some with the New Pornographers, but I don't think she toured with them this time (but I'm not positive). So she hasn't exactly been idle!

And here's the pre-order album link:

Can we add Shawn Colvin to that list?

  16. She has a sincerity most singers today are lacking. All her albums are interesting on some level, even the early ones she has seemingly disavowed. I hope the lyrics are a bit less confrontational this time around than on her last album. I got the feeling listening to it that she used it as an emotional catharsis.

I'm a fan, and have had the pleasure of seeing Neko in concert twice over the years. I'll be curious to hear singles, as they appear.

Not sure how to take the snakes and tarantulas, though. :faint:

I'm not necessarily hoping this, but I am hoping that if there is confrontational material that it's universal and not a product of current politics. It may seem fashionable now, but I don't think a lot of current politically charged art (from either "side") is going to age well. I predict a lot of egg on faces once the dust settles and I've unfortunately had to ignore a lot of present work from my favorite artists of late because of this lack of foresight. I SINCERELY do not want to add Case to this list.

Mrs Pretzel is a devoted fan so this will be getting a regular airing in our love nest. I love her work with the NPs and case/lang/veirs and have enjoyed her in concert many times. This will be my first foray into her solo work, which is quite exciting.

Should add that I saw Kelly Hogan play a show last summer, and she mentioned she had just come back to town the day before from doing a Neko project she couldn't talk about yet. Has to be this record, in which case, I'm particularly excited. Their voices blend so well, and if Neko is talking "Bulgarian Folk singing" and such, that'll be dynamite.
