I prefer the 1962 album version to Dylan's later live versions. Plus I love the random spoken intros on that album. I've been around this whole country But I never yet found Fenneario
I don't ever remember walking out of a show and saying "man, that was a smoking Peggy-O". Maybe that's why none stick out for me all these years later.
I don't think Peggy-O is supposed to smoke. I think it's supposed to be plaintive, on account of the fact the protagonist doesn't have enough guineas. Deal, on the other hand, should smoke. Rooster should always be slide-tastic, w/o Brent swearing. (Listening to the 7/13/89 version now.)
Some of those 78 Peggy-Os at least smolder. The tournament will be academic for me, I've yet to hear one that I like more than 4-16-78.
You actually read my mind. After I posted that, no fooling, I thought, "Watch @US Blues post about a smoking '78 Peggy-O." But it was you! I'm not knocking '78, but that's where stuff that shouldn't smoke sort of does, and stuff that should be on fire practically explodes.
So all this Peegy-O talk...love some more than others. But honestly, never met a Peggy-O I didn’t at least like.
I say we get try and get that '93 in there unless someone comes up with a better post-'89 one just to represent the @warewolf and see how old-timer Jer' holds up. I'm personally not down for any studio outtakes in the tourney but I will listen to those for sure. So at this point we might want to get rid of a '77 and a '78. I think we will really want to keep this to 16 otherwise you risk this getting a little tedious says the '78 college tourney player. If no one objects we can have @scribbs make the final call of 16.
What I like about that tune in early 78 is his soloing combines the lyrical, reflective quality he shows in a lot of 77 with a raw emotional aspect (partly as a result of his hotter guitar tone.) Later on in the year (for instance, the 10-18-78 @bmoregnr mentioned in his rundown above,) he starts to get into that 'play 1000 notes' mode which changes the entire feel of the song.
Peggy-O is one of the tunes that got me to fall hard for the Dead. I love the Jerry ballads/slow tunes in general. They Love Each Other and Row Jimmy are faves, even though I know they arent held in high regard by most folks. Im having fun listening to some of the suggestions. Even though I'm familiar with many of them, I'm not sure I have a favorite. The 6/17/75 in particular is new to me, and it is lovely. I can see why at a live show Peggy doesnt get people going, but listening at home 40 years later they are beautiful.
I was always in awe when I saw it live. There's nothing like standing in front of Jerry when he's doing that.
That's a pretty one. Jerry's guitar takes off at the 3:30 mark and just before the 5-minute mark, he's 100% on fire.
