Does anyone have experience with The Association Insight Out (Mono) 2014 HDTracks? I’d love to hear if anyone likes or dislikes it; or even better how it stacks up to the first album 2017 HDTracks done by Jamie Howarth that I quite like.

I am not familiar with a 3:02 version of "On the Nickel".
    Typo maybe?

Are these not the newly remastered ones by Waits/Brennan released on Anti label?

The remixes? I thought this was about the older, earlier albums, because, to my knowledge, they never appeared in Hi-Res until now.

Oh, okay, we are talking about the same thing. I thought you were talking about the remixes Waits made with Brennan of the Blood Money-Real Gone albums that were already recently released.

I was confused because some of the older albums from the 70s were superbly remastered by Chris Bellman on Rhino 180gr vinyl a few years ago.

No, the Horses CD I refer to is from 1988. I was lucky (born in 1963) to grasp many of the first CD's. And thx for the tip about the rest. Dang was I lucky with Easter. :uhhuh:

I picked up The Association Insight Out (Mono) and am generally pretty happy with it after one listen through. I don't really know this album other than hearing the hits on the radio. I will say this thing isn't really very warm or much of a thick mono recording; it also didn't seem like it was eq'd to be overly bright either. It seemed open enough sounding as well. I posted its numbers Album details - Dynamic Range Database So without really knowing this album I'd say that while it isn't overly bright it did have a nickel/tin kind of metallically quality to it. If I had to guess, and this is a very uneducated one at best, this seemed more like a flat transfer. I can't find much info on where it was recorded but it might have been different studios as well, as the tracks have some sonic variety to them; I also wouldn't be surprised if this was mixed on monitors that had a thick midrange as if this thing is flat it seems to have a hole in the midrange some. Finally Requiem For The Masses had more hiss on it than the other cuts, but that might be well known. So on the whole I think this works for me, but at the same time it is tough to flat out recommend it without knowing more about the album and other alternatives.

None of the others were remixed, were they?

Small Change can't be remixed since it was recorded live to two track.
Sounds great, nice DR values, happy customer.

    That seems right.

I grabbed Small Change from Qobuz in 24/96 to test the waters because it is an album that I know inside and out.
Wow, I must say I'm really impressed with it. It sounds more impressive than my recollection of the original CD and my original German LP.
It's also more upfront sounding, especially in the vocals, which threw me off a bit compared to the LP because the instruments kinda take a backseat. But the clarity and sheer presence is astounding, perhaps slightly too much on the vocals for me to be totally comfortable. Other point of difference: the bass was deeper and more palpable. Extremely rare and unobstrusive limiting on 1 track.
If all the Tom Waits remasters are similar, I'd say they are winners of a calibre the likes of which we didn't see for a long time. I will grab a few more for sure.

This is a tough call. If you don't have vinyl playback, these downloads may be a great option.

However on vinyl the original US pressings are hard to beat. I noted that you are comparing to the German LP for Small Change. Yikes, those German Waits LPs are significantly a step below the US. My US press of Small Change is a very good sounding record. Then you also have the really nice LPs from Bellman a few years back, Nighthawks even besting my original. The older LP re-issue of Rain Dogs is also the best I have as well. Just about every LP original release on ANITI are very good sounding records.

So as a Waits collector on vinyl I can't get too excited about this. But I will probably give one a shot when they run a 20% sale.

Has anyone else received the offer of a £50 off voucher for Technics Tracks? Seems straight up. You can use it on either one or two albums. Anyone got cool ideas for expensive boxsets only available from them? ;-)

You can get the Coltrane Atlantic Studio Album collection for £46. Sadly the Scott Walker collection is £50.50.
