Do you regard "Real Love" and "Free as a Bird" as real Beatles songs?

No, but I think they're good John songs and a great collaboration between The Threetles anyway. :)

Should be someday, I hope. There's short hi res footage from it in Eight Days A Week which looked great.

No, not really . . . at the bottom of my heart.

They were there, then they were gone . . . end of story.

The idea of the Beatles reforming after John's murder without him is sacrilege imho (subtweet)

Yea I do—John wrote and taped the songs in one era, and the rest of the guys finished them in another. It’s not to say he wouldn’t have wanted them done differently, though.

I should amend this to say reforming if ANY of them was dead, not just John:edthumbs:

    I agree ~ they're not.
I like the spirit in which they were done more than I like the actual result.
I quite like them as Lennon solo songs, which is what they really are.

If we start to follow reasoning like
"well, Ballad of John and Yoko is only Paul and John; I Me Mine is only George, Paul and Ringo" ... then All Those Years Ago becomes a Beatles song too.

Similarly, if Yesterday and Julia are Beatles, then all of the solo material is Beatles, arguably, since While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Within You Without You, etc, etc. featured outside musicians.

They are a great tribute to the spirit of a Beatles reunion that everyone wanted but was tragically denied to us.

Three bad nights in my life in particular.

    Death of John.
    Death of David Bowie.
    Death of my Dad

I meet George once (90s I think) at the Sony store in NYC. Such a nice man.

Still embarassed that I shared an elevator with John Entwhistle and did not let him know I knew who he was.

"Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" are credited to the Beatles, and have all four members involved in the recording.

The following official Beatles songs do not:
    Love Me Do
    PS I Love You
    Yesterday
    Eleanor Rigby
    Love You To
    She Said She Said
    Within You Without You
    The Inner Light
    Back in the USSR
    Dear Prudence
Why Don't We Do It In the Road
    Wild Honey Pie
    Blackbird
    While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    Don't Pass Me By
    I Will
    Julia
    Mother Nature's Son
    Long Long Long
    Savoy Truffle
    Revolution 9
    Goodnight
    Ballad of John & Yoko
    Maxwell's Silver Hammer
    Here Comes the Sun
    Because
    Her Majesty
    I Me Mine

I think that the reunion singles are great, under-appreciated gems in the (extended) Beatles' catalog, and I think it's unfortunate how forgotten/dismissed they have become.

Bringing in Jeff Lynn was smart. He channeled Beatles well and the songs did sound like Beatles cuts from the Penny Lane period.

Well, one thing that binds all those songs together is that they were all released under the banner of the collective as Beatles albums. Same for the Anthology tracks.

I don’t count the Beatles Love stuff, as it was just a rehashing / reworking / remixing of old existing Beatles songs.

I wrote this years before on the Forum, but I consider the Anthology albums to be footnotes in the canon.
And the same thing goes for the two new songs. Nothing against them, but footnotes.

And what are you talking about? 3 bits played together on the song while John sung. It’s not just randomly added musical bits by engineers, it’s 3 Beatles playing along John’s vocals recorded a while ago.

This comments makes zero sense. There are a lot of things in this paragraph that are really oddly typed.

This is the problem with calling them “real” Beatles songs. The writer of the songs had input, and often final say on how a song ended up. Not to mention they were also held back by the sound quality of the tracks. A nice curio...no more.

Heck, I don’t even consider the Let It Be album as a real Beatles album. Personal opinion, of course.

I honestly can’t see them being a lot different than how they turned out.

The only people who care about this stuff is ourselves. I can honestly say 98% of the people in the 90’s to this day, who saw the clips and heard the music, just enjoyed the Beatles song and thats it. It was Paul/George/Ringo with John as well in the music videos! If they are not the Beatles I dont know who are.
Imo, it is the Beatles. They got together for a Beatle project, under very secret Beatle sessions, with Lennon’s piece of music, and thats it. Why this isnt the Beatles but Ballad of John and Yoko is? Free as a Bird got new verses by Paul and George (and obviously new vocals), Beatles magic all the way through.
