I'm a fan of some of the current late night hosts, but watching this made me remember how much better Dave was at the interviews. He always inflected his own personality into the interview and asked what I would have wanted to ask. Only other interviewer I can think of like that is Howard Stern (who is going to be a guest in Dave's show).

Unless your name is Jon. He brought his a-game 4 nights a week, and seldom resorted to being the same snarkasaurus he would be in the first segment.

Can't imagine a comedian doing interviews without being funny? I suspect Carlin could have been just as engaged and engaging doing it straight.

Just watched the Jay-Z episode, and I believe it's the best of the series.

it was very real feeling, that's for sure. i did feel like it ended up being more about dave than jay, however. i assume that's because jay-z is super private and wasn't extremely forthcoming.

I was looking forward to seeing this. But, the Obama show was so disapointing and boring!. I mean, Letterman was such a suck-up synchophant during the interview, it was very hard to watch the entire episode. Did anyone else notice that? I love his comedy, but, boy, what a terrible show.

The whole series is very self-serving on its premise. I watched the first two episodes and am giving up on it.

The production, editing, camera work, and format is just all over the place.

I thought it was a great interview. It even moved me to tears a few times. I also really enjoyed the segment with John Lewis in Selma.

i think the loose nature of the interviews mandates the sometimes choppy editing for time's sake. the jay-z interview seemed to be the worst offender; i think probably just for time. he seemed to ramble a bit.

Here's a pretty solid analysis of the problems with the show's editing and cinematography. The old saying is true... if you notice the editing, it's not being done well.
