Artists You're "Supposed To Be Into" But Just Don't Care About That Much

As YOU continue the cycle... and now I am continuing the cycle. No one wins, including you unless you stop now. Stopping now without a response cinches victory for you.

I love George Clinton and I think his hey day was FUNKADELIC. Not to be confused with Parliament Funkadelic. The latter was a different animal completely. Funkadelic, to me, were the better band.

For Prince, since streaming is free, please give these songs a chance at some point:

    1. Sometimes It Snows It April (slow fan favorite, zero showiness)
    2. She's Always In My Hair
    3. Paisley Park
    4. When U Were Mine (yes that way his and not anyone else's)
    5. Strange Relationship

None showy - - just fan favorites that you should give a shot. Again, no reason for you to like him BUT, it may be like someone saying "All Paul McCartney's music is Godawful because I heard "Say Say Say". The few songs you heard when he has albums upon albums of material that weren't the singles, it may be good to give it a shot. But then you could be like me with Beyonce. I'm convinced her music comes second and the ass shakin comes first and nothing will ever change my mind.

Truly a unique phenomenon how these threads perpetuate with the dual goals/poorly hidden agendas of people ultimately trying to convince each other what and why they like/dislike any particular music. Well, not unique, but people seem almost as passionate about their music as their politics.

    @ihadadog - interesting selections for someone who's 119...:winkgrin:

I first heard the Pirates LP when I was on opiates after an accident and thought it was groovy.
I heard it again several years later sober and thought it was bollocks.

Who says these artists make cool music?

Resist peer pressure. Be yourself. Be an individual. Be proud. Don't be a follower. There is no rule that says you have to listen to something just because someone else says it's good. For you, it may not be. So, why waste your time on stuff you don't like? To please someone else?

For Mott - try "Mad Shadows" or "Wildlife" or one of the live albums - they were a pretty kickass band when they were at their best, but there's a fair amount of stuff that I often find uninteresting.

I totally understand what the OP is asking, not like it's hard to relate. Just like people who are gobsmacked that I didn't care for Schindler's List or Kill Bill, there are certain bands who are generally regarded as a "how do you not own this album" kind of band.

For me I could name a few that I've tried to get into simply because they are so highly regarded by peers or similar music nerds, but the pull just isn't there:

    Pavement
    Guided By Voices
    Scott Walker
    The Clash
    The Smiths
    Fleetwood Mac
    The Band
    White Stripes
    Joni Mitchell
    St. Vincent

And a few who I once felt meh about but had a change of heart:

    Grateful Dead
    Elliot Smith
    Radiohead
    The Kinks

Synthfreek I’m a ray of sunshine & bastion of positivity

I think you’re missing my point. The setup for this thread is something you should like because it hits all the right points but you dislike it for whatever reason. In your example, it’s quite clear going in that you do not like rock music with flute which Jethro Tull clearly has. Now how is that something you should like?

Thank you I was thinking the same
About many posts here. Like when someone says "any hip hop". If you don't like any hip hop what makes you think you're meant to like any of it

Can't stand Bob Dylan. Not a Springsteen fan (mainly due to his politics), and I hate pretty much all singer/songwriter stuff from the 60s and 70s.

Dylan - Look, I get it. I know he's a genius. I just can't "vibrate at his frequency" as they say. I don't often feel the way he must have felt when he made those iconic songs.

I just listen to music that touches me, or that means something to me - whether I'm supposed to be into it or not.
