The Stupid Things That CD Sellers Do

I get annoyed when thrift stores still want to open up each CD I have and remove the disc to make sure I haven't "hidden" a second one underneath.

Really, are people still stealing 99 cent discs and if so, my goodness, consider that a blessing as some places seem to have the same exact titles for years.

 

It kinda annoys me that they seal CDs with sellotape.

 

Fortunately I have a pen knife on my keyring. And I have also grown the thumbnail on my right hand a bit long in one corner, which enables me to hold a CD and slice through the sellotape in a single motion.

 

I hate it when:

• Sellers sell used CDs as New
• Sellers sell cutouts as New
• Every early pressing CD a seller has for sell is either New or Mint. Like I really believe they have and endless supply of New 1980's pressings
• Sellers consider Very Good to be the lowest possible grade
• Sellers sell Like New CDs on eBay and you can clearly see the scratches all over the item.
• Sellers take their CD photos on their bedbug-ridden bed

and many more......

 

Sellers who put the discs through a CD repair machine, replace the original box with a new one (usually something cheap) and then put it up for sale as "Like new"

 

These are all reasons that I feel very fortunate to have several good stores (both independents and thrifts) to shop for CD's.

 

Just about all of the large sellers do that. It is standard industry practice.
It is not the Like New ones that you need to worry about. It's the refurbished "New" ones that hurts the industry and other sellers.

 

I agree with you when they use tiny stickers with heavy residue, their broad ones with a bar code on it usual peel off with no problem. For the smaller ones that leave sticky residue, I keep a spray bottle of Goof Off handy, one squirt, let it sit then the residue wipes off with a paper towel.

 

I hate when cut out or drill is so big ruining the cd
lyric booklet and back inlay..

That's one of the greatest advantages of photos on listing IMO. I've been able to avoid many purchases because I was able to see the actual condition of the item.

 

This happened to me on Discogs. I had sent a seller a message with a question on an item that had been listed a week. He answered and when I went to purchase I noticed he jacked the price from $12 to $19! Are you kidding? This all happened in a matter of 5 minutes - ask question, get answer, attempt to purchase, notice price increased. I was so pissed, I never had anyone pull anything like that before. Didn't buy needless to say.

 

I used to go to a store that put price stickers actually on the discs. Not easy-peel ones, either, shred-y with gooey adhesive. I was so frustrated trying to scrape one off with a thumbnail that I used a razor blade, but fortunately I didn't destroy the disc. And that's the store where I got my Ugly Pink Kinks.

 

Goo Gone Gone is a good product for this last step.

Seriously, Goo Gone is weak sauce compared to Ronsonol lighter fluid, which will remove the adhesive and can be easily wiped off. The remainder will evaporate and leave behind no residue at all.

 

Goo Gone melts plastic, creating a cloudy, matte surface. You've had success using it on jewel cases...?

 

Follow up the Goo Gone with isopropyl alcohol immediately after removing the residue. I have had success with this method. Or as Ivan mentioned the lighter fluid is the one step method.

 

I've used Goo Gone on many jewel cases and have never experienced this. However, I have always used it sparingly (just a little bit applied to a cloth or tissue, never applied directly to the jewel case itself). Also, the company that makes it changed the formulation a few years ago, upsetting many loyal customers who felt that the new stuff was nowhere near as effective. I still have about a third of a bottle of the original formula, so I have no frame of reference as to how the currently-available product interacts with plastic.

 

The older Goo Gone formula was like magic, I wish I still had some of that stuff. The newer formula works okay but it leaves more residue and you need more for the same effect.

 

One stupid thing ebay sellers do is when after they've made a total mess of things, an absolutely terrible, stressful transaction, a complete ordeal, they then ask for feedback revision instead of feedback removal.
(Even dumber when you SPECIFIED you agreed you'd remove it, to make sure to send one for removal, but not to send one for revision!)

 

Without a doubt it’s mis-grading CD’s and amount of scratches.

 

My latest gripe with CD sellers is paying right away and then they take a week to mail it.

 

Saw the new Judas Priest CD is sold in a Jewel Case. I cant believe they still sell those crappy cases...

Maybe so. But no one enjoys the long waiting game that SOME ebay sellers choose. Really no excuse for it.
