Starter for ten,Keith Emerson(r.i.p.). Massive record sales, huge following, but imho could have done so much more. His early work with The Nice promised so much...but the noodling doodling pomp rock that he espoused with E.L.P left this consumer cold. I have a gut feeling that I may well be in the minority here...perhaps you have a better example?

My all-time heros Wishbone Ash. Delivered the perfect album (ARGUS, 1972) to universal critical acclaim (SOUNDS album of the year etc. etc) and enthusiastic audiences alike. Alas, despite a bulk of awesome subsequent output, they never matched or even topped this masterpiece. Sigh....

Humm, perhaps to a degree: Jeff Beck (?). Don't bash me over that, please - I LOVE this guy but I wish he had found a congenial vocal partner like he had with Roddo plus a top-notch songwriter I'm sure that would have lifted his career to higher echelons and (even) better albums.

Ryan Adams.....an occasional great track after the genius of `Heartbreaker` but then just messed about.
    Eric Clapton....Gave up trying.
AND....our old friend Graham Parker...should have been a major artist.

Took the words outta my mouth a la Beck... wish there was more vocal-based stuff from him... not fond of either his fusion stuff or the vocalists he worked with post-Stewart...

Maria Mckee. Cool solo stuff, Lone Justice is cool. But never had that one thing that was just perfect, to me. She is so interesting and has a great voice but very all over the place, to me. Love her but wish a producer would have battled her, a la Todd Rungren, and got something very focused out of her.

This is more about your opinion of ELP and 70s Prog than it is about Emerson’s abilities and achievements!
    Typical.

Joe Walsh. I think had the potential to have a career like Neil Young. Decided he would rather take the big easy money and strum along to Take It Easy with The Eagles.

Strongly disagree. How many bands do you know, that with a demented chicken as a front-man, flanked by two zombies, churning out below-par albums for over 40 years, can still fill stadiums?

Me too. I can understand his frustration watching Rod Stewart leave for solo stardom. Bob Tench had a workmanlike rockin' soul man approach, but I liked Rough and Ready. BBA was a huge disappointment. After that, he avoided singers altogether and to my ears, his fusion albums and all the rest were fairly ho-hum. I totally lost interest in Jeff Beck.

So, in your opinion, Mr. Emerson should have played tasteful, non-bombastic, keyboard parts to compliment other artists' great works? He should have not stuck knives into his organ and not played a spinning, airbourne piano? Are you sure you don't just want him to be Tony Banks? I mean, Keith Emerson has a bombastic personality and plays his music, for better or worse, with reckless abandon and with outrageous antics. He is who he is. While his style/career didn't please the critics or "serious" music fans, it pleased his fans. He made cash $$$ doing his style of music the way he wanted.

Sounds like a dream come true to me.
