Any 'Pepper' outtakes on 'Anthology 2' that aren't on the 'Pepper' box?

I was about to burn backup copies of the two "Sessions" discs from the "Sgt. Pepper" deluxe boxed set, when it occurred to me that I should add any extraneous outtakes from the sessions that appear on "Anthology 2."

But aside from the "missing backing vocals" mix of one particular take of "Strawberry Fields Forever," does the "Anthology 2" album offer anything that's not also found on the deluxe boxed set of "Pepper"?

  2. I don't think any of them are on the Pepper boxed set.

The 'Sgt Pepper Reprise' on Anthology 2 is a different early take than the one we hear in the anniversary box set, same with 'Lucy In The Sky' btw.
There's also another take of 'Mr Kite' (with false start) which is not in the box set.
And 'Within You Without You' on Anthology 2 is just an instrumental mix (in correct/original tape speed).

John's solo SFF demos aren't on the Pepper box. And of course "...Northern Song."

If you're burning "sessions" discs, might as well insert the early mono mix of "A Day in the Life." It's the master take, but so radically different from the final version that it warrants inclusion.

Wow, I read this as Art Pepper instead of Any Pepper. Too bad it’s not. I’d love to hear some Pepper outtakes.

OK, so I think I have completed my "complete" 2-CD set of all the officially released Sgt. Pepper out-takes and alternates.

It's basically all the Pepper sessions material found on either Anthology 2 or the Deluxe 50 Anniversary set, with everything sequenced in the same fashion as the 50th Anniversary box.

I made a few minor tweaks:

    1. In addition to all of the content on the two "Sessions" CDs in the 50th Anniversary box, I also included the three rare vintage mixes of songs that were presented as bonus tracks at the end of the Mono Album Mix CD in that box set. It seemed only proper to include those three mixes since the two "Sessions" CDs in the box included not just out-takes, but also the newer mixes of "Strawberry Fields" and "Penny Lane."

    2. There's a brief bit of Lennon chatter that precedes Take 1 of "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!" on the actual session tape. This can be heard on the Anthology 2 version of Take 1, where it belongs, but Giles Martin used it, too, for the 50th Anniversary box, appending it to the start of Take 4. Hearing it open two different takes was redundant and confusing. To resolve that, I simply trimmed it off the beginning of Take 4 since it doesn't really belong there.

    3. I replaced the horrible-sounding 50th Anniversary version of the "Penny Lane" U.S. promo mix with the perfect-quality transfer that Dr. Ebbetts did for his "U.S. Singles Collection" CD several years ago.

    4. I included the Anthology 2 version of "Only A Northern Song," since it was recorded during the Pepper sessions and was clearly a candidate for inclusion on the album at that time.

Here's what I came up with:

    CD ONE (78:12)

Strawberry Fields Forever (Demo sequence, Anthology)
Strawberry Fields Forever (Take 1, no backing vocals, Anthology)
Strawberry Fields Forever (Take 1, with backing vocals)
    Strawberry Fields Forever (Take 4)
    Strawberry Fields Forever (Take 7)
Strawberry Fields Forever (Take 7 & edit piece, Anthology)
    Strawberry Fields Forever (Take 26)
Strawberry Fields Forever (2015 stereo mix)
Penny Lane (Take 6 - Instrumental)
Penny Lane (Vocal overdubs and speech)
    Penny Lane (Composite mix, Anthology)
    Penny Lane (2017 stereo mix)
A Day In The Life (Take 1)
A Day In The Life (Take 2)
A Day In The Life (Orchestra overdub)
A Day In The Life (Hummed last chord / Takes 8, 9, 10 And 11)
A Day In The Life (The last chord)
A Day In The Life (Composite mix, Anthology)
Good Morning Good Morning (Take 1 - Instrumental breakdown)
Good Morning Good Morning (Take 8)
Good Morning Good Morning (Take 8 with vocal overdub, Anthology)
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Take 1 - Instrumental)
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Take 9 and speech)
    When I'm Sixty-Four (Take 2)
    Fixing A Hole (Take 1)
Fixing A Hole (Speech and take 3)

    CD TWO (76:13)

Only A Northern Song (Stereo, Take 12, Anthology)
Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! (Takes 1 and 2, Anthology)
Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! (Take 4)
Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! (Take 7, Anthology mix)
Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! (Take 7, 2017 mix)
Lovely Rita (Speech and Take 9)
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (Take 1)
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (Speech, false start and Take 5)
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (Composite mix, Anthology)
Getting Better (Take 1 - Instrumental and speech)
    Getting Better (Take 12)
Within You Without You (Take 1 - Indian instruments only)
Within You Without You (George coaching the musicians)
Within You, Without You (No vocals, Anthology)
    She's Leaving Home (Take 1 - Instrumental)
    She's Leaving Home (Take 6 - Instrumental)
With A Little Help From My Friends (Take 1, false start and Take 2 - Instrumental)
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Reprise (Take 5, Anthology)
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Reprise (Speech and Take 8)
Penny Lane (Promo 45 mix, Dr. Ebbetts transfer)
She's Leaving Home (First mono mix)
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (Lost mono mix - No. 11)
A Day In The Life (First mono mix)

To go with newer mixes of SFF and PL, I would consider including the "Yellow Submarine Songtrack stereo remix of "Only a Northern Song".

And maybe also the other Sgt Pepper tracks/remixes in the Songtrack.

I'm not sure the other mixes are different enough to warrant their inclusion... but it's worth thinking about.

Don't forget to take Lucy take 1 from the 2CD set, since it has the speech at the end that didn't make it to the big box

So if you were to reduce this to one CD that focuses on the music and sense of "newness"....what would you include? In other words, what is we were less focused on being completist and more or novelty and musical interest.

If the Anthology 2 version of "Only A Northern Song" was George Harrison's "final artistic word" on that song, I don't see any harm in taking the Peter Cobbin remix from 1999 and increasing the speed of that to match the Anth 2 version and fading the track to match the fade out of the Anth 2 version. Then you'd add a strong dose of compression to make the track fit among the tracks on the 2017 remix of "SPLHCB".....

The "Penny Lane" take 6 instrumental is quite enjoyable. One of those things I never new it existed, having never turned up any boot.

You'll notice that the big box lists the track as "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (Take 1 And Speech At The End)" but does not have any speech at the end. The 2 CD set lists it only as "Take 1" but has the speech. Perhaps the easiest explanation is that they accidentally swapped them at some point.

If you really want to get in the weeds, the 2CD set also has "A Day In The Life (Take 1 And Hummed Last Chord)" which is a unique edit, albeit made using elements included in the big box.

It eventually became part of the master take/edit later, just speed this up a bit and it sounds exactly as the final version we know but without the vocals and overdubbed drums, trumpets, etc.
