But is this cycle any better than his earlier cycle? I bought that earlier cycle at least a decade ago ...
Blomstedt's Leipzig Beethoven cycle is critically acclaimed and generally preferred to his earlier Dresden cycle. I haven't heard the latter so I can't comment.
That's right, DG Archiv. I think all the MAK recordings were for Archiv. I'm with George: the old Goebel/MAK set has been my "go to" for years and years. But my word, it certainly put the Penguin People into a snit, didn't it?
I have not yet received the new Brandenburg/Goebel/SONY set. However I do not expect it to be so radical as the old one was. That was groundbreaking indeed.
I have listened to both HIP Brandenburg Concertos by the MAK (first version) and by the freiburger barockorchester and was not impressed by either ...
I bought the Bach set of Orchestral Suites by the Freiburger Barockorchester and do not care for it at all. Something about their sound and playing rubs me the wrong way I guess.
Wow I have been thinking about ordering the new AP SACD of this album. I have held off as I have never heard the Borodin and already have an excellent recording of the Cappricio Espagnole I am happy with. I take it you recommend this album highly?
Now playing CD2 - Symphonies Nos 2 & 4 from the following box for a second listen. It has been a good 15 years since I bought the box ...
As this is the first time these have been on SACD I thought I'd get them and noticed that the Mastering Engineer is Kazuie Sugimoto who I believe masters Esoteric SACDs. I still have never heard any Esoteric release so would be interested to know if they are really worth the extra or not?
Tonight I am enjoying one of the more (or perhaps the most) underappreciated of Beethoven symphonies, #2. Great sound and performance.
If you like Viktoria Mullova's style of playing (which I do) then you will appreciate Kogan. She studied under him. His recordings are also some of the most highly prized in collector circles: Kogan's Spectacular 1960 Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto Reissued By Electric Recording Company And as a BTW if anyone else is interested the SACDs are double and contain Kogan's other EMI/Columbia recordings including Lalo Symphonie Espagnole and the above mentioned Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto.
I always enjoy recordings by Viktoria Mullova and will check out some of Kogan's recordings. Unfortunately, his EMI Icon box has gotten a bit too pricey ...
