Choose among the following bands on who you really would have liked to see a studio double album effort.

    King Crimson
    Blue Oyster Cult
    Rush
    Deep Purple
    Black Sabbath
    Queen

Of these bands I lean towards BOC or Rush as having the ability (material) to pull it off.
But can you imagine if Sabbath's Vol 4 or Sabbath Bloody Sabbath would have been a double album.....
Our world would be different today.

A double album by the mythic Led Zeppelin/Black Sabbath collaboration...

The plan was to record a double LP. Of course, a number of people will say one disc was bad enough, why extend it to two? Nevertheless, the original album contained a lot of first-rate material, and based on some of the tracks that later surfaced on Joe Walsh albums and musical snippets of others that were presented on "Long Run Leftovers" on The Eagles box set, I suspect that a compelling double album could have been produced had the band not been plagued by the issues it was dealing with at the time.

I'd love a double album by Queen! Maybe like Queen II with some more folklore/mystic stories from the Kingdom Of Rhye.
Wonder if The Doors could fill 4 sides for one album, containing 'Celebration Of The Lizard'.

A double double album! Carnegie Hall not counting!!

Not a one. Honestly, there’s only a handful in history that, to me, should ever have been made.

Oops! Sorry, did not read the OP close enough.

How about Black Sabbath mid-1970's. It could have been epic.

Of the ones offered by the OP I think only Queen and Rush would have satisfactorily pulled off a double album with all great material. Just my humble opinion of course, nothing against the other bands.

If the Roth era Van Halen ever made an album longer than 36 minutes they would have to release it as a double album.

Kinks VGPS would have made a great double, if you consider all the Great Lost Kinks material. (Although they weren’t on your list! From the list I’d vote Rush.)

I would have loved to hear Rush do a double concept album/rock opera at the peak of their powers, sort of like what Clockwork Angels ended up being. The idea of a Black Sabbath double album is intriguing as well. I'm imagining an album like Vol. 4, only with an extra 45 minutes to get completely lost in the atmospheric murk.

I think we got that with Queen for the most part, take any song from Opera and Races and switch them and they would fit.

Deep Purple MKI ..wish they would've lasted long enough for one more studio. A double, kind of a cross between their third, DPIR, and Captain Beyond.

Out of the list I wish Sabbath did a studio double album.I wish Volume IV was longer.
Off that list definitely Van Halen I as a double album.

King Crimson. A cross between "McDonald & Giles" and "In the Wake of Poseidon", as the second LP by their original Fripp/Lake/McDonald/Giles/Seinfeld lineup would be FANTASTIC.

The group had over 30 songs recorded from January 1969 to August 1970 available to use, including:

    1. Forever
    2. San Miguel
    3. Break Away
    4. Celebrate the News
    5. What Can the Matter Be?
    6. Deirdre
    7. When Girls Get Together
    8. Got to Know the Woman
    9. All I Wanna Do
    10. Cottonfields (45 Version)
    11. Loop de Loop (Flip Flop Flyin’ in an Aeroplane)
    12. Add Some Music to Your Day
    13. Slip on Through
    14. This Whole World
    15. Tears in the Morning
    16. Our Sweet Love
    17. At My Window
    18. Back Home
    19. Where is She?
    20. Walkin’ (Half-completed though)
    21. I Just Got My Pay
    22. Susie Cincinnati
    23. Take a Load Off Your Feet
    24. Carnival
    25. Good Time
    26. Fallin’ in Love
    27. It’s About Time
    28. Cool, Cool Water
    29. Seasons in the Sun
    30. H.E.L.P. is on the Way
    31. Big Sur
    32. Lookin’ at Tomorrow (A Welfare Song)
    33. ‘Til I Die (Lacking overdubs at the time of the album’s release)

Rename the album to Add Some Music (because what better way to add some music to your day than with a double album?), include 25 or so songs (personally, I’d save “‘Til I Die” and “Lookin’ at Tomorrow” for the followup), and you’ve got a winner.

"Wildflowers" should have been Tom Petty's double masterpiece. Might yet be. Here's hoping.

Sticking with your original question (yes, I actually read what you said, lol!), I would go with a King Crimson double studio LP... maybe. I'd have to hear some of it first before shelling out the dough.

Even though I found the Long Run Leftovers to be a hodgepodge of half-finished ideas, I love the idea of a double LP version of The Long Run. Would've been a fine way to go out (though I guess the band did not "go out" after all).

Going off menu here by saying Paul McCartney. Twice he put together double albums, but neither one was ever released as intended.
