What’s your favourite song in With the Beatles?

For me it’s Not a Second Time. It’s their most underrated song in my eyes. The lyrics, the melody, it’s unique and yet very familiar. I love the whole album, even more recently. It sounds incredible despite the panning and I love the guitar on it. Ringo’s drumming is almost the same for every track, though, to my ears. I also love how fast paced this album is. It’s part of why I think The Beatles were always making albums, not just collections of songs. My guess is All My Loving for top track followed by Money, which only just clicked for me recently. My second favourite early Beatles album.

Fun fact: Money is the first Beatles song in stereo with centered vocals, which I believe was done to save space.

Meet the Beatles had "I wanna hold your hand", guess I haven't played the UK versions enough.
My choice in the poll......"All I've got to do"

I didn’t know anyone still listened to U.S. Beatles albums.

I vote It Won’t Be Long, a great opener and would’ve made a great single, with its call and response “yeahs”. To me, it might be the best “yeah”song they did, a more advanced She Loves You, if you will. It’s pretty perfect.

This album, in both stereo and mono, suffers from nearly zero bottom end. As good as the songs and performances, it’s a shame this didn’t get the same kind of hot treatment the first LP got. You can crank that one, esp the mono. This one is thin, thin, thin. Too bad.

Part of my reassessment for loving Beatles For Sale is what an advanced recording it is compared to the first three. Both stereo and mono. Maybe not as many good songs, but it cooks. With The Beatles deserved a more rockin’ treatment.

"It Won't Be Long" for me as well. One of my favourite Beatles songs full stop. Should have been a single.

"Money" would be my second favourite

Went with the opener but tracks 2 and 3 are just as strong.

Not a Second Time’s bass is almost inaudible.

Not A Second Time for me. It has something melancholic already at this early stage. The solo piano, although simple, is very effective in evoking its own loneliness - especially by ending its short melody on a low note. The little drum roll as well matches the feel of the solo piano.

    All My Loving.

It's the best melody on the album, and possibly the best, most classic melody of all their early songs. Listening to a George Martin orchestrated version from a MMT bootleg recently really drove this point home for me.

Interesting that the words were written first, considering the strength and timeless quality of the melody.

Many do. It's what we grew up with. I prefer Meet the Beatles and US Rubber Soul. And Second Album kicks butt.

The opening 3 tracks may be the best openers they did.

"Money" honey.. and for me "Hold Me Tight" is a great little number. There are a few songs that are better, but these rank as my two faves.

I've never heard a good accounting of / explanation for the steep drop-off in sound quality from the 1st to 2nd album, beyond that George Martin wanted to make a "high impact" record. I'd love to hear more details if anyone's got 'em.

Now that I'm reading this thread, the first 3 tracks are among the strongest 1-2-3 punch combos on any Beatles album.
