The latest effort from the prolific Shabaka Hutchings. Not so much jazz this time as jazz, Caribbean, afrobeat, reggae, all mixed into the groove.

I've really been enjoying this one!!! I'll be surprised if it doesn't end up in my year-end top ten. Though it has different musical influences, there's something about its exuberance and tunefulness that reminds me of one of my favorite jazz albums of the earlier part of the new millennium, O'Neal's Porch by the William Parker Quartet. I was lucky enough to see Shabaka and the Ancestors live at the Montreal Jazz Fest this past summer--they were electrifying.

been really enjoying the new Amen Dunes - Freedom. has a good Deerhunter-vibe but a bit folkier, a little more charred by the campfire than the glow sticks -sound.
I'm looking forward to the new Hop Along but'll wait to pick it up from the band when I see them in June.

Just dipped into new releases on Deezer and uncovered a great album. No physical release that i can find in Uk. Brymo album Oso is nigerian/blues/ambiant/spiritual with some great lyrics and tasteful guitar. I am probably behind the curve on this guy but need to check out his other stuff.

This is actually the album where they are starting to sound like the mothership in places. So much that I actually thought it might be cool to have some Laetitia vocals.

The only thing that put me off was that the first record (clear vinyl) skipped in places. Knowing "Transient Random Noise", I expected this to be intentional but it wasn't. Seriously never had anything like this before. A cleaning made the skips go away but now I'm a bit wary to play it:evil:

What's also quite good is "New Material" by Preoccupations, their postpunk sound is really accessible without sounding like Editors:uhhuh:

One of the reasons I love this thread. Recommendation of albums I probably would not have considered listening to. My first listen right now. Love the guitar sound. More after I'm done with the album

Virtue, the new album from Julian Casablancas's The Voidz, is unwieldy, crammed full of ideas, and sounds like the soundtrack to a nervous cyberpunk movie. There's a few moments reminiscent of The Strokes, but more often it sounds like paranoid Ariel Pink.

If you like Scandinavian jazz, check out this 2018 re-re of Hasse Walli & Zeus’ POP-Liisa 16 (1972) from awesome Finnish label Svart:

And the proggy Sammal album called Suuleikki, which is also from Svart:

The rave review it got in Spin online made me check it out on Spotify. Fantastic stuff, tuneful and pushing the boundaries at the same time. The tuba as bass is wonderful and "My Queen Is Harriet Tubman" is currently top ten for me.

So many excellent releases this year and we're only entering the 2nd quarter. I have to make time to listen to all this stuff, and I'm retired!

They have a great pedigree and have been behind some brilliant albums as Viet Cong, Women (and even Chad van Gaalen?). I really liked your comment about the Editors as I was a little disappointed with this one on first listen, because it did remind me of the Editors, Interpol, White Lies, etc. It is growing on me, though, and I would recommend it to anybody with even a passing affection for that Joy Division sound.

I feel like a child in a sweetshop. The records I know on this page are great (Ty Segall, for eg) so I can't wait to try the others. I was recommend the Sons of Kemet by my record shop, so I will play that next (once Freedom's Goblin has finished).

I am really into the new Khruangbin album. Very much, actually. Also the new one by Hollie Cook - I can really cool off listening to that one. Other than those two, I have heard quite a number of 2018 releases and thus far there have been some fine releases. The new Judas Priest sounds great and varied, the new Jack White is interesting... Both new artists and veterans seem to pull it off.

I like New Material, but I still don't think they've been able to match Viet Cong. I was disappointed with Preoccupations and their general change in sound, but after listening to New Materials a couple times, I think it's an improvement in terms of songwriting and atmosphere. I was reading one of the band members talk about their music, and they mentioned each of their albums is supposed to be its own, stand-alone thing, which I thought was a cool approach. Seeing where they go next should be interesting.

Chris DeVoe RIP Vickie Mapes Williams (aka Equipoise)

I just discovered this. It was playing on the background system at Chipotle. I asked Google Assistant "What is this song?" and it identified "Erstaz" by Fischerspooner and offered to play it in Google Play Music. I'm listening to it in good quality via my Bluetooth headphones right now.

    I love technology!

I like Chris Carter's new album 'Chemistry Lessons'. Very diverse and eclectic, with a definite Sleazy influence on some of the songs (Disembodied vocals, etc.). First release I've really been excited about for 2018.

Wish I could say the same for the new Ministry album. I kind of wish Al would stick to his promise to retire Ministry once and for all. This latest is just another repetitive run through of their greatest cliches'. Further compelling evidence that Ministry isn't Ministry without Paul, whether Al likes it or not.

I think the only connection to Chad is Flemish Eye? Totally separate artist. However, another Preoccupations related project to check out is Cindy Lee. They reissued Act of Tenderness last month.

This is great. Feminist indie rock that takes the best of Morrissey, pop-punk, and traditionally male-oriented aspects of alternative rock and modernises them with a thoroughly up to date sentiment.
