The florid piano intro of “Lady Grinning Soul” pauses before Bowie starts his dramatic vocal. A special moment.

Staying with David Bowie how about the 1979 remake of “Space Oddity”.... instead of the lift off segment on the original, the song is utterly silent for what seems like an eternity before a solid drum beat ushers in the main body of the song.

Patty Loveless - I Try To Think About Elvis. "Come on Patty, get it together".

Bonus points because the song mentions the Beatles. :)

Really with you here, there are those two very powerful pauses at 1:31 and 2:10 that seem like what the song is all about.

When you start listening for it: Lennon put a little break in many, many, many of his songs.

    Showgirl by the Auteurs.

I’m hoping that by spending the last decade churning out highly specialised concept albums, Luke Haines is doing the same thing on a macro level and the we’ll get a proper collection of delectably sardonic songs at some stage.

  19. Can't see the list right now, but it's fatally compromised if it doesn't include "Final Solution" by Pere Ubu.

Not sure if this qualifies, at about 3:10 on this song, you get a magnificent transition of the arrangement with the saxophone and the vocals, half way through, teena marie my dear mr gaye video - Bing

Teena was the queen of doing what this thread is about IMHO. She knew what tension in music was about, made it sexy, made ya think about it, I love the many other mentions given, just had to shout out mine...
