I downloaded an album I previously uploaded to Amazon's Music Storage and was greeted with a nasty message in their stand-alone software today warning me that they have discontinued their Music Storage service. At the expiration of my (paid) account, they will delete my entire MP3 library unless I purchased it originally from them. No renewals are possible.

THIS is why I canceled Amazon Prime and rarely shop there now. I am tired of their arrogance. Walmart, Target and others retailers work just fine (both online and physical locations). I spent years carefully uploading my CD collection to Amazon for nothing now. I don't believe there is any easy way to download everything uploaded there. This is not the first time they screwed me like this. Last year they discontinued their general "unlimited" online storage offering. :disgust:

The downside of "cloud storage" and web-based email. You're totally at the mercy of the provider.

I've said this before, but Amazon seems to be trying to set some kind of world record for the biggest squandering of their user base in the shortest period of time. Once they invent their delivery drones, it's probably a matter of weeks before they equip them with cannons to spray oil on your house or face and throw a lit match on top of it. And the sad thing is, people would still use the service!

Anything I bought in the cloud I kept a copy of on my hard drive, but it doesn't do me much good if there are no services willing to host that stuff. Will other hosting services pop up to serve consumers like me, I wonder?

I got a message from Amazon UK saying I could keep my files if I open a link in the browser and select 'keep my files', which I thought was reasonable, baring in mind I never paid for the extra storage and only had the free 250 songs worth. I did try the cloud storage but it matched my songs with wrong versions or even worse some awful public domain version they were offering for sale.

For now, yes. But even if that stops, I don't see how someone, somewhere, won't figure out a way to make money by offering cloud storage to the disenfranchised.

Crashplan also did the same thing with their unlimited backup plan (I did foresee this, some people would brag about backing up hundreds of terrabytes there), so it's not just Amazon. At some point it starts costing them quite a bit of money from people storing tens and hundreds of terrabytes.

I am guessing Backblaze will be the next to shut down their unlimited storage, for now they say it isn't an issue since they don't allow people with Linux servers to use the home plan.

Yes since you bought the original CD there (or their paid digital copies). They are deleting all the MP3s that we uploaded under their paid storage plan. This plan allowed 250,000 songs by the way.

Yikes. I tried to upload music to Amazon once but couldn't figure it out and gave up. I am glad now.

Ummm...I don’t think you understand what is happening. They are not taking away albums you purchased from the cloud. They still exist as AutoRip.

They are retiring their old, free, cloud-upload service that no one really used anyway.

They had sent me an email about keeping up to 250 songs I had uploaded in the past. But I had already deleted those long ago (was a storage subscriber at one point, but canceled years ago).

I've seen too many storage companies come and go. So I keep my digital library local, and backed up twice over, and use these services sparingly. I'm currently leveraging OneDrive but I might kill that off in June and be done with it.

Local storage, and that includes on smartphones, is just going to keep increasing as time goes on.

Very good advice for serious music fans. I do keep my CDs, but I still wanted a convenient way to curate the collection and be able to play them anytime/anywhere. The goal was to do the "rip thing" once, upload the songs to the online library and forget about messing around with them forever. Obviously, Amazon couldn't care less about all the wasted time and hassle they cause their customers.

And to make it worse, their stand-alone music software really sucks. It is a gigantic memory hog, super slow and has bugs galore. To think about all the struggling I had to go through with dealing it over the years really burns me up even more. Leaving behind their horrible software is one positive aspect of this development. I also will not miss their sloppy music matching implementation. Quite often you were stuck with the newest remaster of a song supplied by the record company or some strange copy of it sourced from a obscure various artists compilation or soundtrack. I suspect they did the latter to somehow save licensing fees.

I think this is Amazon's way of getting people to use their Amazon Music Unlimited service instead. It reminds me of the following lyrics:

As we celebrate mediocrity all the boys upstairs want to see
How much you'll pay for what you used to get for free

Reading all this pita business kind of makes me happy I'm an old Luddite that walks over to my library, picks what I want to listen to, pop it in to my CDP and hit play.

  25. I will never trust a cloud service with anything beyond temporary storage or as a back-up.
