From the Fricsay complete DG Orchestral Works: Fantastic performance (slower tempos than other recordings I've heard of this piece) but the second movement might be the most beautiful rendition I've ever heard. I can't say enough what an amazing conductor Fricsay was
Fricsay was truly a talented conductor. That must be a wonderful set you have. Thinking about what tape to play next and seeing your Dvorak selection, I've pulled out the Dvorak Symphony No.8 in G Major, Op.88. This performance is from 1958 (released in 1959 in Epic) with The Cleveland Orchestra led by another great conductor, George Szell. For anyone unfamiliar with Dvorak, his symphonies were renumbered after this tape was produced. Symphony No.4 became Symphony No.8.
I thought this editorial from ClassicsToday was really strange, cataloging an assortment of criminal activity including King's, and then shrugging it off: https://www.classicstoday.com/editorial-sexual-shenanigans-classical-musicians-recordings/
I love Dvorak's 7th and 8th symphonies too. I can't wait until the Szell Complete Columbia box set comes out in August (I have only a handful of his recordings but have loved everything I've heard by him)
You are right...when universal acquired the Philips Classics Catalog, the Philips Classics label ceased to be. The Philips logo was retained by the Philips Company of the Netherlands (and has been licensed to Universal occasionally for Philips back-catalog releases). The actual Philips Classics recording team however continue to operate as the Pentatone label, which continues to create new recordings and license their own recordings from the Universal back-catalog for release as multi-channel SACDs. So, in the most significant sense Philips Classics (minus the back-catalog) has continued as Pentatone.
All the Beethoven Piano Concertos are in the following box, which I bought a few years back but have yet to find time for a second listen ...
Now on the turntable, "Dvorak - 'New World' Symphony No. 9" performed by The Cleveland Orchestra led by George Szell on CBS Great Performances.
A great performance! I have the original LP -- a gold label Epic. Your "Great Performances" edition should be a remastering of this, though I've not heard it to compare.
I thought the "great performances" releases were all reissues of Columbia/CBS recordings? Was Epic bought out by CBS/Columbia, or were the titles re-licensed? Not sure why it would matter. Just curious.
First listen to new arrival, "Medtner - Forgotten Melodies Op. 39 / Mood Pictures Op. 1 / Sonata Triad Op. 11" performed by Ekaterina Derzhavina on Crystal.
