I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this question, but what management tool are you using to keep track of your music collection (other than Excel)? I've been using Discogs to track/record my LP's, CD's, Cassettes, and 45's, but they've recently implemented a new ugly as hell system full of bugs:

Discogs Forum - new collection format ? has this just happened

    Any recommendations?

Just Word. It's simple and easy to use once you enter everything and very easy to keep up.

I played with the Discogs app. It was a snap for my CD collection. Scanned it all in within about 45 minutes. Damned accurate as i recall? The LP side was different story. Most didn’t have any scan codes at all, some that did didn’t return any results, so I was going to have enter the vast majority manually. That was going to take more time than I had, so I lost interest, but I can completely see the value of it now. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen something cool a record shop and say to myself “I think I already have that.” Get home and nope. Lost out... again.

Part of the thing about collecting vinyl I never realized before Discogs was how many different pressings/releases there are of a single album. Apparently different pressings have different quality. I haven’t gone back to see if Discogs gives me that data. Not sure I’m ready to get that into it yet. But, I would like to access what I have via my phone.

Funny. I get it. Have, strike that, had a best friend who felt compelled to prove he was the smartest guy in the room. Miss him.

Yes, it's definitely great to have access to your own collection in one place that is mobile accessible. The problem I'm facing (and many other collectors on Discogs) is they just released a very problematic and buggy system that has upset a lot of their members (see the link in my original post). Many, including me, are looking for an alternative to Discogs to track and maintain our collection.

I'm using Discogs. It took a while to enter everything, but I work from home and broke it into manageable chunks. Once you have everything loaded it is easy to use the app with your phone while record shopping. It keeps me from buying something I already have.

It looks the same to me, but I see where some changes were implemented that make changes for users who have under 2K in their collections.

I use CDpedia on my Mac and iPhone. It's designed for music collections with a ton of customizable fields for artwork, ratings, tags, links to outside sites, etc. Similar to FileMaker in a lot of ways but a lot cheaper and streamlined. Here's a screenshot of one of the entries.

    All in my head.

Not because it's organized well btw. Mainly because I'm just lazy.

I used Discogs for my lps. It's still the best catalogue for me although I wish the app was a bit better. There's so much information on there for each release, I could never duplicate it a bespoke system.

For my cds I use Delicious Library. It's Mac only and very affordable. I didn't much like the changes they did moving into version 3 and they haven't made any improvements now in ages so I have been looking for another place. I thought of using Discogs for my cds as well but I've been too lazy and don't feel like rescanning them.

I'd suggest you have a look before committing. The reason I started this post is because Discogs released a new version that is ugly as hell and full of bugs and I was looking for alternatives. If interested, see my OP for the link to the Discogs thread for more details.

Even if you have trouble with Discogs, you can still use it, and then export the data, and then do whatever you want with it.

I wouldn't be worried about using Discogs, just because they're testing out some UI fixes, and features.

I have entered all 4000+ of my collection into it, and never use their collection features, I just export the data when I want to access it in other easier to use formats.

Never thought of exporting my collection details. Giving it a try now. Kind of annoying you have to wait for it to be processed. I'm assuming it's a manual process on their end i.e. you request, a human runs it.

    Edit: never mind arrived quickly!

I have been using Collectorz as a management program for some time. It is a great program, comprehensive, but easy to use. I highly recommend it - trial versions available at collectorz.com. You can get a sense of the way I have used the program at the link below:

I also use Music Collector from collectorz.com. I'm all-in with the software. I especially like how you can access (and share access) to your collection via the web. Lots of ways to customize for your own particular needs. I print small removable inventory stickers (just a 5 digit index number) and put them on my media once I enter them into my database. I also like the Loan Manager functionality, although I loan more movies than I loan music. I use their Music Collector, Movie Collector, and Book Collector software. Good stuff!
