Third worst track on the album after the old lady poem and 'Danny's Chant'.

Bare Trees would need to be represented by at least the following three tracks on any respectable "Best Of Mid Period Mac" (with perhaps another Kirwin track - if there's room - to acknowledge his dominance of the album in terms of both quantity and quality of his contributions):

    Sentimental Lady
    Spare Me A Little
    Sunny Side Of Heaven

Those are the three "should have been" hit singles from the album and NEED to be there. I'm not sure what the fourth track should be, but it should definitely be one of Danny's. 'Dust' is a beautiful track to be sure, but perhaps a bit too "heavy" for such a "best of" compilation - but that's no problem as that still leaves the title track or 'Child Of Mine' as strong contenders. Embarrassment of riches from Danny on this album, I'd say!

I wish i had my own compilation handy.................actually, its on my ipod:

Fleetwood Mac 1970-1974 (I should really give it a name but for now that will suffice)

    1. Dragonfly
    2. Purple Dancer
    3. Station Man
    4. Earl Gray
    5. Preachin The Blues
(this is on the Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac BBC Session double cd but is actually from 1971 - solo performance by Jeremy Spencer. Noted that Fleetwood Mac played several sessions at the BBC 1970/71 post Peter Green leaving.)
    6. Woman of 1000 Years
    7. Future Games
    8. Show Me A Smile
    9. Sunny Side of Heaven
    10. Bare Trees
    11. Sentimental Lady
    12. Dust
    13. Emerald Eyes
    14. Hypnotised
    15. Why
(intro is edited for timing reasons)
    16. For Your Love (in retrospect this selection was a mistake, would like to change this when i next amend my own 70-74 playlist.)
    17. Keep on Going
    18. Come a Little Bit Closer

Nothing from Penguin as I still don't own it - maybe one track from that to replace For Your Love.

I believe the Kiln House era belongs to this period, always have, always will. Preachin The Blues is superb and whilst it does perhaps fit better in the Peter Green blues era I like to have it included as it is from this era.

I don't know exactly why but this period is referred to the "Wilderness Years".

How did we get to page two before anyone mentioned ‘Dragonfly’? It’s spectacular, and Peter Green’s favourite Danny song. Think it’s post-Jeremy but pre-Bob. But not totally sure.

For historical accuracy, Dave Walker needs a space. ‘The Derelict’ is pretty good.

Purple Dancer and Dragonfly for sure.
    Woman of 1000 Years
    Sands of Time
    Sentimental Lady
    Emerald Eyes
    Hypnotized
    Bermuda Triangle
    Trinity

Bob worked well with Danny and Christine. He’s much loved on this forum and with good reason. The band will tell you he kept them going when things were tough. He was a super talented and very interesting man.

I'll probably skip Dragonfly because it's on The Best of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, which I have.

I don't subscribe to the idea of dividing Fleetwood Mac's career in three eras, the only big change in sound occurs between Mr. Wonderful and Then Play On, everything else is a smooth transition from album to album, and there is nothing distinguishing a unified "middle period" other than the fact that Green and/or Buckingham/Nicks were not in the band.

So with that out of the way, here is what's on my F.M. playlist for the relevant era (have no idea if they fit on a CD):
    "Dragonfly"
    "Station Man"
    "Jewel Eyed Judy"
"Tell Me All The Things You Do"
    "Future Games"
    "Sands Of Time"
    "Lay It All Down"
    "Sentimental Lady"
"Spare Me a Little Of Your Love"
    "Remember Me"
    "Did You Ever Love Me"
    "Hypnotized"
    "Why"
    "Heroes Are Hard To Find"
    "Bermuda Triangle"
    "Come A Little Bit Closer"
    Bonus:
    "Purple Dancer"

Kiln House obviously belongs to the "Kirwin era"!: Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac: 1969 To 1972

My favourite era is the "anything pre-Bramlett/Mason era".

If it is so important to divide everything neatly and correctly into eras then maybe introduce the "Mk." system that Deep Purple fans use, that'll keep everyone busy for a while.

I truly believe these entire 4 albums stand on their own merits. You could cull some good songs from Penguin and Heroes. But these 4 are must haves in their entirety.

It sounds more like Then Play On than what followed, though.

I happen to love Station Man from that album.

Christine had just joined the group, with Danny and Jeremy still present.

If you like Dragonfly, you need to see the live Beat Club performance with Welch, Danny, and Chris doing harmonies. I don't even listen to studio version anymore.

I'm with you, but Welch has better songs IMO. I love the flute. Hated this song for year, but I've been listening it more and more the last few years.
