They were both huge leaps. Rope was kind of a messy one though. They had clearly taken it to a new level with songwriting and playing and when it worked it really worked, but some of the ideas seemed half-baked and it didn't gel like the debut. On London Calling though they were able to just stretch out and everything worked (probably spending extra time at Rehearsal Rehearsal helped). Although the album contained elements of punk and reggae above all this was a classicist rock and roll record, and a great one at that. They would never repeat this again.

Again, you can't possibly have listened to these artists' catalogs.

This is not true for me at all. Gabriel's first two albums are markedly different from his third and forth in terms of the production sound and the overall character of the material as well. After casting about a bit initially (particularly on his Bob Ezrin produced debut, which was all over the map stylistically), with his third self titled album (1980), Gabriel redefined his sound for a new decade and became the modern PG we all know and love. Each of his first four albums has its own distinct character in my mind.

Truthfully - and I like Springsteen very much- I know where Alexpop is coming from. Pre The River, I struggle with which song comes from which album. I like 'em all but they all sound very similar to me.

Nebraska is different but only if you regard it a demo which got a proper release.

I'll happily concede that you know more about the Boss' music than I do, but as much of a fan as a casual listener can be, I believe that Alexpop has a point.

    No way
You have every musical style on Sandinista including a waltz. Each track completely different from their strong S/T efford from 77'.

Clearly people are confusing “making the same album” with “having a unique sound”.
And others are simply slagging bands they’re not into.
Having said that both AC/DC and ZZ Top make the same album over and over. And I’m a fan of both!

Yep. Not to mention, the moment "up to" gets inserted as a qualifier, it means the band doesn't fit the thread.
