They still have July 78 boxes available don't they? Another 78 box wouldn't be a good business plan. And speaking personally I need more 78 like I need a third shoe, so well done Mr. L.
Thinking about expanding my all too miniscule GD vinyl collection. I got Aoxomoxoa, AB, WD, Terrapin, Shakedown and Cornell 5/8/77. My local store got: -GD box (Wake of the flood, Mars Hotel, Blues for Allah, Steal your face), Rhino from Black Friday last year, I think -Europe 72, Rhino RTI pressing (3 LPs) -Shrine Exposition Hall 11/10/1967 (3 LPs) -Also considering the upcoming RSD San Francisco 2/27/69. What do you think, any keepers? Also wondering how the albums in the box and Europe 72 compares to orig. pressings.
Sorry ive been awol for a week. Insane time in Texas last week. Went from Dallas to Laredo, all the way down the border to Brownsville and back up tge east coast to Houston. Grabbed a load to Virginia and then shot home. Today around Greenville we loaded up the trailer again. Ran about 150 miles. I played 5 7 77 Boston. Good stuff. I feel in a Dead mood again. Tomorrow we leave for Texas again. Livingston, Robinson and Abilene. Then a pickup right across the New Mexico border. I remember waxing poetic a few months ago about tge Dead fitting west Texas perfectly. Im sure there will be good Dead playing this run. Love you guys. Peace and all that.
Jan 2,3/70, late summer and fall of ‘72, spring, summer and fall ‘73... Parts of the first half of ‘69, including 2/15. As far as the Ark, it’s really a question of how restorable and complete the tapes are (also true for late fall ‘72)
In response to the Abilene reference above, I can’t help but recalling that I spent the night dancing with a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader in Abilene, TX the night my sister was married. I was 18; she was 21. It’s been 24 years and I’ll never forget that night. I would disclose more, but, of course, I’m a gentleman. Was just becoming acquainted with the Dead at that time thanks to a college roommate. It would be a few years until Europe ‘72 did the trick.
I have to agree. The cd version sounds amazing. You might also consider the Harpur College 5/2/70. Grateful Dead “Dick’s Pick Vol 8” 5-LP Box Set *INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING – NO TRACKING*
What's he say there? "thing 1, thing 2, and thing 3" and then something about doing a project they have never done before. I am curious to what that will be.
If I had my wishes, it would be to release a full version of a show that they have previously released in partial form. I would love to have a 1970 Fillmore East set with 2/11 and full versions of 2/13 and 2/14.
Oooh, I like that as a hypothetical "thing they've never done before." I guess they've kind of done it in the past -- for example, with the bonus disc from the Winterland '77 box that wound up getting repeated in the first May '77 box -- but to make that a thing that's done with some intention, and acknowledge that that's what they're doing, that would be new. The digital box set hypothesis is intriguing, but I shudder at the thought of what might happen during the journey from concept to execution. Unless they're, like, developing a new division that is solely focused on downloadable products that actually work, I can't say I have an overabundance of confidence.
Cover songs on bonus discs: Iko Iko (RT 1.2) Hard to Handle (RT 1.3) Sing Me Back Home (RT 1.3) Big Boss Man (RT 1.3) NFA (RT 1.3) Lovelight (RT 1.3) Good Lovin' (Rocking The Cradle) Good Lovin' (RT 1.4) Around And Around (RT 1.4) Viola Lee Blues (RT 2.2) Good Morning Little Schoolgirl (RT 2.2) Lovelight (RT 2.2) Morning Dew (RT 2.3) Around And Around (RT 2.3) Gloria (RT 2.4) Broken Arrow (RT 2.4) Stuck Inside Of Memphis (RT 2.4) Dancing In The Street (Winterland '77 Bonus) NFA (Winterland '77 Bonus) New Minglewood Blues (RT 3.1) Me And My Uncle (RT 3.2) Beat It On Down The Line (RT 3.3) Next Time You See Me (RT 3.3) NFA (RT 3.3) Lovelight (RT 3.3) Smokestack Lightning (Dave's Picks, Vol. 6) Good Lovin' (Dave's Picks, Vol. 6) Needless to say, I don't quite get what Dave is saying when he says that bonus discs cannot have cover songs on them. Not including traditional songs, I counted 27 instances where bonus discs had cover songs on them.
Perhaps it's something that only came to light 5 years ago. ASCAP/BMI noticed what was going on and said "hey, wait a minute."
It may be that technically bonus discs are free and you can't pay royalties to artists if you didn't collect money for the discs. Any lawyers out there who can weigh in?
It's probably along the lines of the Dead not being allowed to give away other people's music for free.
Don't get too excited. As I recall, the last time they did something "they'd never done before", they released a show from Hawaii. When I heard him say that, I thought there surely must be a cover on a bonus disc somewhere. There are tens of bonus discs. Maybe he means that the accountants (or lawyers) have told them they can no longer do it because they owe royalties on discs they are giving away for free. Maybe someone sued them. Very odd to offer this explanation now in light of the list you made. Clearly something has happened or changed to make them review their approach since Dave's 6 (assuming you haven't missed any!)
