I've already purchased from Amoeba and Rough Trade today -- both have a lot of stock left. Also 1234gorecords.com, though I can't get their checkout to work for some reason...

I got the Soul Asylum live show from Amoeba today and the Grateful Dead 1969 Fillmore West 4 LP set from Bath House.

If I'd been swifter, I would have purchased the Neil Young Tonight's The Night show from Bath House, too. They had it in stock. Oh, well. It will be offered for regular sale in a few weeks. I'll buy it then.

Oh yeah they still have a lot but the ones people are scalping on the auction sites like grant green and run the jewels were instantly sold

No one has any Floyd to speak of I was told the stores didn’t get many

Why do have a feeling there will be a regular Floyd mono release down the line? Oh yeah $$$ for the record company and band members.

You'll recall the REM Unplugged vinyl releases a few years ago, sold out quickly and only had with a high premium on the after market. Today you can find them quite often at a great price from insound.com the discount site.

Of course there will. You think it’s an accident that once you peel the slipcase and the poster, it looks just like a normal release? Economies of scale.

It was actually brilliant. How to market and drive demand for a MONO release...

    1) Press 35,000 (or whatever) mono LPs with regular covers
    2) Print just 15,000 (or whatever) “special” slipcases and posters for RSD (to drive interest but clearly not enough to meet demand created by that interest)
    3) Don’t announce the intention to release the regular edition at a later date
    4) Folks who otherwise wouldn’t have bothered with a mono pressing of Piper descend upon record stores all over the world.
    5) RSD edition quickly sells out - due to a combo of cool factor and normal demand.
    6) Many buyers left in the cold desperately wanting the disc and hoping there is, at least, a normal release.
    7) Announce the normal release...no slipcase, but at least those left in the cold can now get a copy of this treasure...woo hoo!
    8) Folks who normally wouldn’t have bothered or would have waited, now quickly scoop up the mono LP for fear they’ll miss out again.
    9) Sell 2 or 3x as many as they would have ordinarily.

You’re comparing the REM Unplugged release to the Piper mono?

There wasn’t a single one available on ebay or discogs or Amazon US yesterday from a North American seller. Amazon.ca had a few at $60+ incl s&h. If right after RSD is when the return is highest, why aren’t we seeing them for sale - even at ridiculous prices? Because there is simply very little supply in N.America. Sure, a regular release will bring down demand for the RSD version, but it won’t help supply.

You won’t find the RSD edition of Piper mono - in the US - for a “great price” anytime soon. And probably never.
