    Missing one for Sabotage:

    6003 red USA, matrix: "UQ41<022>SSI6003-11515AZ"
    86.3 42.0 91.6 91.2 87.0 59.3 96.4 84.3

I'm convinced that most of the releases for each CD are the same masterings (well, sonically), with only a few that are possibly different.

Sabotage for example. I bet all 3 listed are the same. The only difference is the 2nd song is shifted for some reason between them.

    Live at Last:

    95.1/89.1/77.4/68.5/86.6/65.3/93.7/97.8/97.8
    96.7/87.1/77.4/68.4/88.2/67.9/94.9/99.6/99.7

I wouldn't be surprised if those two are the same, see tracks 3 and 4; the rest are shifted. And then all 3 together:

    95.1/89.1/77.4/68.5/86.6/65.3/93.7/97.8/97.8
    96.7/87.1/77.4/68.4/88.2/67.9/94.9/99.6/99.7

    97.2/91.0/79.1/70.0/88.5/66.7/95.8/100.0/100.0

1 and 3 seem to be just shifted between each other.

(For some of these I have them in a spreadsheet. and it's easier to see the shift as a multiplier. and not a constant number difference.)

MoR, I'm not sure of. If you stack them all together:

    92/81.3/94.3/47.3/61.9/93.2/43.6/89.8/98.6
    92/81.3/55.6/94.3/61.9/93.2/43.6/89.8/98.6
    74.4/77.9/40.5/81.6/47.2/88.9/84.1/66.9

    67.1/71.6/40.1/76.5/48.7/77.2/78.9/64.8

1 and 2 are clearly the "same". Looking at track 1 to track 2, 1 and 2 decrease; whereas 3 & 4 increase. At first glance, 3 and 4 might be shifted with respect to each other, but then:

    Code:
      #3 #4 ratio difference
    74.4 67.1 1.109 7.3
    77.9 71.6 1.088 6.3
    40.5 40.1 1.010 0.4
    81.6 76.5 1.067 5.1
    47.2 48.7 0.969 -1.5
    88.9 77.2 1.152 11.7
    84.1 78.9 1.066 5.2
    66.9 64.8 1.032 2.1

So here, there might be 3 unique masterings, although that would surprise me.

The one small thing I can add, is that I have 600x and 600x-2's for them all. And in my case, they are the same for each album. But maybe I just got (un) lucky that way!

  2. Thank you very much, your thoughts and tests are appreciated. You have obviously more experience with CS releases than I have; I haven't done extensive tests with most of my CS. Anyway, when I recently checked my 3 CS releases of the Sabbath s/t, all 3 sounded similar but really not identical to me. (I didn't blind-test that though, so I might be wrong.) You are of course right, two CDs with slighty different peak levels can sometimes share the same mastering (with just a different volume level); at the same time, CDs with very similar peak levels can sometimes contain completely (or slightly) different masterings.

Anyway, in the end it is only really relevant for CDs that sound really good, compared to e.g. the Castles, SACDs, Sanctuary remasters etc. And this is true for only very few CS releases.

I was thinking about this thread, and then if anyone had ever gotten all the PACD Black Sabbath CDs, and if there were any gems in that series ... :)

Are you interested in peak data on CS releases only, or also on the 86 Castles, in order to compare? I ask because there are a few Castles with NELCD matrix among what has been listed above. If so, I have a few Castles I could EAC to complete.

I always thought that 86 Castles and CS were identical mastering-wise, but never had any CS to check. So can someone confirm that they are indeed different?

  8. Thanks for your offer. To my knowledge, the CDs listed above are really all CS, not Castles, even though though that some of them do have an "NELCD" or "NEL CD" matrix. The CS with such Castle-like matrixes were possibly (CS releases are so messy, it is hard to say) copied of the respective 1986 Castle releases - which doesn't mean they would necessarily sound the same: according to Roland, at least one of the CS MOR releases sounds like the Castle once you add the PE flag to the CS:
Which means that CS probably copied it from the Castle but wasn't aware (or just didn't care) that the Castle had PE.

Anyway, based on multiple posts on the subject on this forum as well as on my own tests with a few of these CDs, we can already rule out the possibility that the CS releases generally have the same mastering as the Castles. I am sure that you'll find more detailed information and discussion in Roland's famous Black Sabbath threads:
Roland's favorite CD versions of Black Sabbath albums
Roland's favorite CD versions of Black Sabbath albums (part2)

E.g. none of the 3 CS releases of the s/t I tested sounded identical to the Castle - they sounded extremely different without PE flag, and less but still different when I added a PE flag to the CS (as Roland suggested above). Generally, CS did have access to master tape copies of some sort because of the deal that Sabbath had to make with the Meehans, so it is likely that many of their CDs were tape-sourced. In a few cases, they likely copied Castle CDs (you pointed to the Castle-like matrix numbers), but "forgot" about the PE; and according rnranimal above, they used an LP-rip for at least one of their "We Sold Our Soul" compilations. It is quite possible that they even used different sources for different releases of one and the same album. Generally, Sabbath CS releases tend to be of significantly lower quality than the Castles. The only CS CD that seems to be almost as highly regarded as the respective Castle on this forum is the s/t with the INTER SERVICE PRESSE DIGIP 6006 matrix, and even that one needs a "fix" (PE flag manually added) because otherwise it sounds unbearably bright.

Personally I think it would be confusing to add information on Castle releases to the list of CS releases above. You might consider starting a new thread specifically for Castle releases if you like; most information you'll need for it you will probably find in Roland's threads (see above).

Thank you for the clarification. I thought the NELCD matrix was a Castle release, but thanks to your post now I know I was wrong.

PACD = Australian releases, mate. :)

I've heard that the transfers are even worse than the Creative Sounds discs, but just wondering if anyone had ever listened to them all. Looking up a few on discogs, they look a lot like the '86 Castles.

The PACD releases are reportedly a complete mess. Can't remember what it was but like one channel completely screwed up or something.

Of course, for all I know this is wrong, but I think someone may have even posted a sample here at one point.

  14. ...which totally makes sense IMHO. The numbers give us some hints as to what is possible, but they still leave a wide range of possibilities open - and obviously they don't tell us what we'll hear.

Regrettably I cannot really help with this. As pointed out above, there are not many Sabbath releases where the CS (any of them) is considered to be among the best available versions. The only one where I am sure this is the case is the s/t; and I don't know about Live at Last. In case of the s/t, the one that was suggested to be good by Roland was the release with the "INTER SERVICE PRESSE DIGIP 6006" matrix (but only if you add the PE flag). My comparison suggested that the other two CS releases I have for the CS sound quite similar, but not identical. The similarity was too large to make up my mind which one I prefer; and I didn't really care that much, because both the SACD and the LP-rips of the original UK vinyl sounded much better anyway. "Wicked World" is missing from those though. At some point, I will have to do an extended comparison of all available copies of that song. (Fellow member rnranimal has suggested that the 2014 HDtracks hi-res release contains what is probably the best version of WW, though it would need some EQ to sound right.) For all other Sabbath albums, I have never taken the time to do a closer comparison of available CS releases either because they weren't recommended anyway.

After all, I think it is really important not to misread this thread. Its existence and the effort to compile a list of the peak levels of available CS releases might be misconceived to imply that the Sabbath CS CDs generally tend to be valuable - which really isn't the case. In my understanding, this thread's main function simply is to help with information in cases where someone is talking about a certain CS release and others are wondering if it is the same that they have or not. Given the way that digital releases and discussions have progressed (with some of the 2009 Sanctuary remasters and 4 of 6 available Japan SACDs turning out to be superior over all or most of the earlier digital releases), this thread would have been even more helpful had it been created at least 6 years earlier (but hey, better now than never!). Anyway, if you're looking for more substantial discussion on the best available digital versions of Sabbath albums, Roland's threads are the place you have to visit:

    Very different "Peak Levels".
Obviously, not knowing about this measurement as much as the rest of you, would have avoided multiple 100% peaks.
Would not have picked the lowest peaks either; unless familiar w/each specific track.
    Appreciate the guidance!

Again, thanks all for the info.

Really grateful for the detailed analysis. Didn't think the "CS" option would be the best [only match the best at best]. Just saw the value & availability aspect from the OP.
Know about the great passion Roland has put in here at SHMF, for what a decade, on "Black Sabbath" CD's [Digital Discs].
    Thanks for sharing as well!!

  17. If I were mastering a recording myself, I would follow that rule as well: leave a little head room, so avoid 100% level, and also avoid very low levels because they usually mean that the proportion of tape noise will be relatively high. Anyway, without knowing anything else about the sound of the respective recording, peak levels usually tell us nothing about its quality. Comparing them merely gives us a preliminary and fallible (see Kevin's longer comment above) idea about possible differences or similarities between different releases. With the exception of some possible but unlikely extreme cases (e.g. a peak level of 10% or so for a track that shouldn't be extremely quiet), such differences or similarities again tell us nothing about which of the compared releases would sound superior.

The self-titled CS is also good for completing Roland's hybrid version of the first album, getting both Evil Woman and Wicked World in pretty good quality. (Well, except that you would probably want to de-emphasize that disc to get it to sound the best.)

And I like the CS for Sabotage, for SotU and Megalomania, to replace those less-than-adequately-transferred songs on the '86 Castle.

Also are the indexes the same too?
6003 seems that some tracks share peices of others.

Does the red inked CD of Sabotage from Creative Sounds have pre-emphasis?

  23. To my knowledge, no Sabbath CS release has ever been proven to have pre-emphasis; PE on CS has never been more than a theory supposed to explain why some of their releases sound too bright. But several WB releases sound just as bright or even brighter, releases that definitely don't have PE. Even the 2012 remasters are very bright, and nobody has ever claimed those were pre-emphasised. :)

    rnranimal and Freezerburn like this.

    kevin5brown Analog or bust.

Bingo. No PE for any CS discs as far as I know.

  25. Kevin, nice to see you! Any thoughts on my Sabotage and Wicked World shootouts? You know I always value your opinion.

EDIT: I posted those in the Roland thread, of course. ;-)
