I bought the CD "Flora Purim - Stories To Tell" (barcode 025218661928), from the Milestone Label/Original Jazz Classics series. I opened it and for my disappointment i noted by the media color that it is a CD-R, not a pressed CD. On the Matrix / Runout is written "RFD80M" (which indicates it's a 80 minutes CD-R media). Just to confirm i put it on a media info program, and it's really a CD-R (picture attached below). On the back cover says "Made in the EU". On the plastic seal has a hologram sticker saying "Universal Music ITA", which indicates that this is authorized by the record company. For me, as a collector, this is a counterfeit product, even if this is allowed. The inserts also do not look like a original good product. Is this common or new in Europe? I previously bought other CDs from this same Original Jazz Classics series and it's all original pressed CDs, not this garbage CD-Rs.

Some actual pictures of the product in question:

I bought it online from Grooves-Land, which i think it's a reliable store and probably don't know nothing about that.

This isn't the first time this has been mentioned. Apparently they are legitimate but you'll have to search around the Forums to find exactly what I'm mentioning. It does suck though and I'm sorry you had to experience this conundrum.

These products may be 'legitimate' from the point of view of the record label, but for the unlucky buyer that paid for a CD and instead got a crappy CD-R it is a complete rip-off.

And the price is not much different from an original. I paid GBP 6.89 for it.

I thought we determined the Joe's Garage disc was a legit factory presses cd. I am referring to our PM exchange a while ago.

Totally agree. I love the cd-r technology but when I purchade a retail CD, I want an actual factory presses CD.

Don't remember that. However the disc looks much different than all my others and I've had trouble reading it before. Will have to do more research.

Yet another solid reason for undergoing all the effort of backing-up your entire library onto server discs. In many cases, a CD-R a CD player won't read anymore, can still copy the program onto another medium, from which it will play flawlessly.

I purchased Cat Stevens’ Izitso and Back To Earth from Barnes & Noble recently. Both were CD-Rs.

I can see it being pretty much widespread in the next few years.

  14. Wow, now that is something I haven't seen before in a retail store. I knew Amazon has been carrying a number of "official" CD-Rs from various labels but didn't realize any other retailers had picked them up.

Exactly, given the limited demand for physical media and the costs of doing a run of pressed CD's, it only seems logical economically to burn them on demand, or in very small runs.

Naively i sent an message to that store Grooves-Land, alerting them that the product i received was a CD-R and this was not stated anywhere on the product page. This was the reply i received today:

    "Nor an inferior production"
And they also say on the rest of the message that i can return the product to them, but at my own expenses, which here in Brazil would be the double the price i paid for the product.

The data that comes off of a CD-R is the same as would come off of a pressed CD. They should sound exactly the same. So to most people, not an inferior production.

  18. CD-Rs are far more fragile than pressed CDs, with a shorter lifespan. I would immediately rip any CD-R for future archival purposes.

Good (after sale!) customer service from Grooves-Land, a store I have purchased from. I guess if this is the only way to get a "new" hard copy....
Had they originally stated CD-R product, would this have given one second thoughts?
CDs do seem to be on life support & will continue. "Kids" just wanna download.

Maybe yes, maybe not. We don't know what is the master or process they use to burn this. And CD-Rs may have reading issues depending on the media quality. Anyway, i'm not refering to the technical part, but for the collecting side. I don't like CD-Rs and for me it's garbage. If i wanted a CD-R i would just download the flac files and burn it myself instead of buying it.

I saw on Amazon that Seasons 5 and 6 of "The Middle" were only available as dvd-r. I saw these for sale at Barnes + Noble and was wondering if they were pressed or burned? Guess they are probably burned.

I guess you'll have to check on the packaging at Barnes & Noble. If they are DVD-R's they should say so. If you buy them open them in front of the customer service dept. and check if it doesn't state it on the packaging.

This isn't a download; you're not paying for the data, but for a physical product that has tangible qualities. I not only care that it plays, but that it is well-made, durable, pleasant to hold, and worthwhile to collect. Otherwise, I'd just stream it for free.

    This product is a rip-off.

CD-R is a joke. You might as well burn one at home. The data will be the same, but a CD-R won't live as long as a pressed CD.

    Just as stated above - a rip-off.
