I dare to say that the reality today, more than ten years after this movie was released, already surpassed it...

Fox studio gave Mike Judge creative freedom after King of the Hill. Great movie, but the studio buried it. No Blu-ray despite being a cult favorite.

I was told by a friend that I had to see this. I did. It's funny, but cuts way too close to the bone. There are bummer, gritty movies from the 1970s that I can handle better than this one. I don' know if Judge meant the film to be just a satire, social commentary, or a warning of what may come, but as years go by and as funny as this movie is, I find it almost too painful to watch.

Much like Network, I think this one will be seen as a harbinger of what is/was to come. The question is, will people be too stupid to recognize the satire?

I quote from it more and more recently: "He's going to fix everything!"

I like the movie as a great collection of moments, but as a whole I wasn't able to connect with it. Still tell people to watch it, though.

There has been a thread on this before.

I always say the first 10 minutes of that film are pure true horror of how society is going.

decades from now aliens will discover a copy in the rubble and say 'so THIS is what happened"
never really thought mayas character worked in the context of the film. but everything else is so good and hits wayyyyy too close to the bone a mere ten years later (shudder)

Saw it when it came out on DVD and thought that it was pretty bad. I remember a couple of funny moments but it wasn't enough to make me want to see it again. The idea behind it was great, but the execution was lacking. It was a disappointment, especially coming off of Office Space, which is a classic.

I think it would have been better as a short film.

It needed something more. Then again, I'm not an OFFICE SPACE or SOUTH PARK fan, either. That kind of broad satire just doesn't work for me for more than ten or fifteen minutes, a la the ONION shorts.

Prophetic satire working at a higher level than many folks here realize.
Not so much an anticipation of 2016-17 as a logical extrapolation of the
political mess of 2006-07 and it's discontents. Viewing current events
critically suggests that the cultural trends lampooned in Idiocracy have
started to reverse as the bureaucratic State unravels and pseudoscience
is (at long last) being systematically defunded in the public sector.

Network is my favorite movie ever. We're already at the point where people no longer get that one. Had Network had a sequel, the story could have been that the viewership that was manipulated by UBS' sensationalistic news programming were now running things, which is pretty much where we are now.

Have that happen over a few generations and you get Idiocracy.

Idiocracy is harder to watch because the people in Network are capable people who either have no scruples or have lost their way, whereas the people in Idiocracy are not capable. It's the old question of which is scarier: capable people doing the wrong things or people who really don't know the difference? "I don't care about your damn ideals!" vs. "What?"

It may be harder to deal with the former in real life, but it's harder to be entertained by a movie that presents nothing but the latter.
