Picked up this reissue of an obscure 1965 album by guitarist Phil Baugh and singer Vern Stovall. Baugh was a session picker who scored a minor country hit with the flatteringly imitative "Country Guitar", while Stovall is best known for writing and recording the original version of "Long Black Limousine" (later covered by Wynn Stewart, Glen Campbell, Bobby Bare, Merle Haggard, Connie Smith, Elvis, etc.). "Country Guitar" is effectively an updated version of "The Hot Guitar" by Eddie Hill.

Stovall sounds a fair bit like Wynn Stewart, though perhaps with less power behind his voice. Samples:

I'm not sure I posted in a country thread before. I'm not a country fan in terms of the top hits of the day but I certainly like some of the players and a lot that have a country edge to them. Jamey Johnson, Sturgill Simpson, Aubrie Sellers and Chris Stapleton are some of the current artists I like and Lucinda Williams, Dwight Yoakim and Emmylou Harris are touchpoint. From earlier its Merle Haggard, Johhny Cash (though I actually like the Rick Rubin albums best) and Willie Nelson. I haven't bought a Willie album since Stardust so I'm a little caught off guard about just how much I like this most recent album Last Man Standing. Right now this is one of the best albums I've heard this year. Very nice stuff. The man keeps moving.

That record is actually a crucial link toward the Rock 'n Roll era just as much as Haley's "Rock The Joint" or Brenston's "Rocket 88". Doesn't get enough mention. Good to see an original 78!

I mentioned this in the used bins thread but I recently found a pristine copy of Loretta Lynn's debut single ("Whispering Sea/I'm a Honky Tonk Girl", on the Zero label) in a local record store's 50 cent bin. Much like with classical music, to most people the gems can hide in plain sight!

Great find! Not only is it's a strong debut, but it's worth about 100 times more than what you paid.

I lucked into a copy of the super rare Waylon and Company CD, a 1983 duets album. Some previously released tracks (like "Just to Satisfy You" with Willie and "Spanish Johnny" with Emmylou) mixed with brand new tracks. Not a great album, but some standout tracks, and highly listenable.

  16. I acquired what seems to be the guitar strap that was on display at the RITS Show celebrating the band The Riders in The Sky, and it is signed by 4 members. Woody Paul, Too Slim (Fred LaBour), Ranger Doug, and Joey The Cow Polka King. If someone could tell me if this is worth anything that would be awesome. Thanks y'all!

For a couple of bucks, found a sealed copy of Merle's solo debut in stereo at a swap meet last weekend. Been finding a lot of sealed records lately.

I tend not to buy releases from the B.A.C.M. label because 1) they're CD-R's, 2) they have limited annotation, and 3) the sound is often iffy. However, I'll make an exception when the music is too intriguing to pass up and there's no alternative. Such is the case with Glenn Douglas Tubb, nephew of Ernest and cousin of Justin. Just ordered this collection of his 50's recordings including his sole LP released on Decca in 1958.

He also co-wrote "Home of the Blues" for Johnny Cash and "Skip a Rope" for Henson Cargill.

I got the Guitar Slinger release by Vince Gill from a few years back.

Not a great album, still very good. I give it an A-. I love the production style, which means I prefer that it is not over produced. I recommend it. Vince should probably do more like this one, as I think he's an excellent guitarist. And of course has a great voice.

I got the new Willie Nelson album, Last Man Standing, but realized afterwards that there's a special edition at Cracker Barrel that has three additional tracks...so the hunt continues! :)

I also got the 4-CD Conway Twitty set from Real Gone that compiles his first armful of record albums.
