Chris, this video is excellent! You should talk to the band and propose filming a live DVD (or perhaps a series of) for them in the future!

I can't believe they got dropped! Mono, though a horrible sounding album, was brilliant as far as the songs and performances. I don't know what knucklehead suggested that terrible mono mix, but since most people except us don't really care about that, I doubt that was an issue (though many reviews on Amazon complained about it as well). I guess if Mono didn't sell, with all those great songs, their days of selling a decent volume of music is over. Smart that they are doing it themselves. I look forward to buying it!

I picked up Trampoline after reading a review in Stereophile, and listened to that cd so many times in the late 90's. My wife and I saw the Mavericks at Jihn Ascuaga's Nuggett casino in 98 or 99. It was a fantastic show. Great music and great live sound.

Thanks. It was pretty limited as I only had a three-input Tricaster, and was the entire video crew, switching the show and operating the cameras.

Trampoline....ah, the album that started it all for me! Dance the Night Away is one of my favorite songs, period. No only great music, but man, the lyrics are so fun! I don't need you anymore, woman! Fun stuff. I hope they issue this on vinyl someday. FYI: I don't know if they have multiple concerts on DVD, but the one I have is nothing short of fabulous. It sounds great and so do they, and a stellar track list.

Speaking of cover songs(someone mentioned HARVEST MOON), I ran across a video of them doing US AND THEM from Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon lp. They do a great job of it. It was such a good job that I got my DSOTM cd out and listened to it. Hadn't listened to it in 6 or 7 years or more.

My brother just got back from the Outlaw Country Cruise and they opened their 3rd show with Us and Them! Harvest Moon, Born on the Bayou (with bits of Within You/Without You by the Beatles and The Coconut Song by Harry Nilson). Duets with Joe Ely and Jim Lauderdale and Jesse Dayton.

How neat! Much like Branson, these cruise gigs pay quite well and hopefully this will enable them to release more great music on their own label. Jesse Dayton is also great, haven't seen him play in at least 20 years. Takes me back to the days when Austin was less pretentious and in its prime.

Bumping this one because I can't find an overall Mavericks thread. Raul and the Mavericks are coming back to Knuckleheads Saloon in Kansas City for three days of shows!

May 11 & 12 are big concerts by the band. May 13 is a solo Raul show. When they've done this before, they have pulled up some deep tracks. If you really love the band, come make a festival of it.

Great band! Catch them every time they come to the Portland (Vancouver) area. Put on a great show. Cover Neil Young and Pink Floyd songs too. Just great performers.....

I just listened to their latest Brand New Day album again. It's funny how you can listen to something and really not like it, and come back to it at a different time and feel completely different. While I still think the sound is very disappointing, yet again, I really enjoyed it and have played it three times over a few days. The songs are terrific, even if they are starting to sound a bit repititious. It's just a shame they have all those wonderful instruments going, and an amazing band, and it's really just muddy sounding and clumped together. I just don't get it. Before Mono their stuff was so well recorded. Even if it's a budget issue you can still at least mix the instruments so that there is space between them so they can all be heard well. Really no excuse for it.

I hope they come back to Denver again. Have never seen them live and all their concerts look like a whole lot of fun.

before the vinyl revival, they released this on vinyl, took ages to hunt it down, but it's still probably
    my most favourite album:

I really haven't got into their newer stuff too much for some reason. Also, i don't think 'sonically' the quality isn't quite there
like on their earlier MCA albums..... Great band though! would love to see them live!

I found that on vinyl a couple years ago and paid a pretty penny for it...pretty rare. What a fun album. I just love the cover! Yes, they changed their sound somewhat after Trampoline so I can see why you feel that way, but sound quality aside Mono and the album before that one are very good. Mono is unlistenable to me on cd, but the vinyl is passable and is full of great songs. Had it been recorded properly it would be an all time top ten album for me.

Yes Jrr! that cover allured me when i even saw the CD cover, then found out it was a vinyl release, and knew i
had to have it, but like you, i paid a pretty penny for it. I was just looking at ebay, and see a copy of
'from hell to paradise' on vinyl! never seen that one before either.
I got 'mono' on CD, and i also played it twice maybe, then put it on the shelf... it just didn't 'cook' for me.
Funny, i was gonna say, i was really into everything they were doing til about 'Trampoline'. I like it more now
than when i did at the time, but it's been years giving that one a spin.
After that one, a lot of it changed, and lost interest.
I loved their performance on the show 'Sessions at west 54th' which i taped to VHS in the day.
    Brilliant stuff.
    Have you seen it?
only segment i can see on youtube is this:

a big part of their sound i enjoyed was guitar gun Nick Kane. I didn't realise the political reasons on his firing.

I was given a copy of Trampoline by a friend as a CD to listen to when we moved to Colorado. I just love Dance The Night Away, and it's an awesome album opener. They seem to always put a perfect song as song one on their albums. I had not heard of them before; we moved here about 15 years ago. I never got into much of the rest of the album. When they started releasings stuff later in the 2000's, again, the album before Mono, I really got into them. Part of it was they were putting their albums out on vinyl, and vinyl was not big again yet, so I would buy almost anything I thought I might like then. When Mono came out, first I bought a download version and it was, and I am not exaggerating, so bad I thought I hated the album. It turned out I just really coudn't discern the songs very well because it was a huge pile of mud. I got the CD and it was good enough I could tell the songs were good. And then the vinyl was released and it sounded "okay" but for the type of music it is, and how dynamic that band sounds, it still was pretty bad. They purposed ruined it by introducing a very fake mono sound, and I think this was done midway through the process instead of actually being recorded properly in that genre like was done in the 60's. The complaints on Amazon are legendary, especially for people that as a whole don't care about sound quality like most of us here do. I only say all this to encourage you to maybe get a copy on vinyl, if you do vinyl, as it's cheap and it really is a fantastic album. I just got a second "backup" copy for $8.98 at my local store as they had a special going on old RSD product, which this was at the time.

Since then they have released a live album, that sounds really really bad so I won't be buying the second volume that is supposedly coming out, and Brand New Day, which sounds better than Mono but still is very subpar. They really need a producer that has the authority to handle how it sounds, because whoever is doing that is completly unqualified.

My copy of Music For All Occasions was laughably off center, but is probably why it was sold, but isn't that what drills are for? So, fixed it and it plays mint. Glad you found a copy...it was a blind purchase for me, I didn't even know about the album and lucked into it when I was on eBay. It's a fun listen, which seems to be what they are all about! Thanks for the video link...again, shows how fun they are. What an amazing performance! I think they have a long touring career in front of them...it appears you could see them repeatedly and still have a good time. I doubt their albums are selling well, however, which is disappointing. Anyone that cares about sound is probably going to totally avoid their albums going forward, which is a shame. They are excellent song writers as a band.

Jrr, that was an excellent read of your thoughts, and I feel like I mirror everything you've said. I thought about picking up the 'Mono' on vinyl, and after hearing it on CD, I passed it by. I was checking out the new album today and I'm still a bit 'meh' about them.
I also pulled out there 'live in Austin' DVD today and had a watch, and it's 'OK' to 'Very Good'.
Raul and newer member Eddie on guitar seem to really drive the whole thing, and Raul is quite obviously
the star of the group. Robbie is there on bass doing his job, but his stint was short lived 'again', as he is no longer
in the line up due to his hiccups it seems.
Regarding the 'Music For All Occasions' LP, I havn't played it in years, but I think it too is an off centre pressing,
so you are not alone, i'll need to dig it out for a spin, it's been a looooong time.
I think your right though, they need a good producer at the helm to bring 'The Mavericks' back.
    Great discussion!
