tldr / how much of this thread is posts by people who think you mean "music that's good to listen to when you're stoned" versus the actual genre described on page 1? smdh

If you are looking for new Stoner Rock, Doom, Heavy Psych or Sludge Metal bands, then you have come to the right place. Heavy Planet has been providing free promotion to independent and unsigned bands since 2008. Find your next favorite band at Heavy Planet. Thanks for stopping by!

    Heavy Planet

here's the archived version of their 2013 "Top 50" LP list (which they know has new contenders as time has passed) but it would seem a good intro to some of the classics. it has a good history and sub-genres sections too:

    http://web.archive.org/web/20111109000707/http://www.squidoo.com:80/StonerRock-Doom-Psychedelic

    bwahahaha:

What genres of music do you cover on Heavy Planet?

Your submission must fall into the Stoner Rock, Doom, Heavy Psych and Sludge metal categories. We will consider anything that we deem "heavy" enough for Heavy Planet. We will not, however, consider Thrash, Death, Mathcore, Black Metal, Industrial Metal, Goth Metal and their sub-genres. Nor will we consider Rap/Hip-Hop, Alternative Rock or Indie Singer/Songwriter submissions or any band that sounds remotely like Nickleback, Three Days Grace or Five Finger Death Punch.

Interestingly enough the best "stoner" music isn't rock at all. It's jazz. There is no better stoner music than Miles Davis, "In a Silent Way". Really puts you in the zone.

I've always resented the genre name, having fit the description at the time it first became known, and that was not the kind of music I was into at all. Giving us a bad name!

But based on this thread I put on some Kyuss, and they sound a lot like a band I was in in high school. I've since come to think of that band as heavy prog/psych, but we'd probably have fit in the Stoner genre. (Also the guitarist was called Jerry Buds)

So I guess I was in a Stoner Rock band and didn't even realize it. If you asked me in 1996 to name some Stoner Rock, I'd probably have mentioned a band fronted by J.Garcia, and it wouldn't have been Kyuss. (just like a lot of people here.)

It'd probably be less confusing if they just called it stoner metal, though I bet to most my age or younger its not quite heavy enough to be metal. Still I'm sure older people were using the term stoner rock well before it got applied to the purported genre, as this thread illustrates.

"Stoner Rock"/"Stoner Metal"/"Stoner Doom" pretty much the same thing. The more retro sounding bands are more oft labeled "Stoner Rock."

Reading this I thought I wrote it, this is my experience with Stoner rock too, there's lots of new stoner bands that are great, the more I listen to them the more I realize they all sound the same and they all sound like Kyuss.

Just for the record psych and stoner are my favorite genres

Welp- this thread is ten years old and I've just seen it for the first time. So not sure whos listening and probably someone has said this but-

The first brighblack morning light album is stoner nirvana. Not sludgy but kinda bluesy droning Gaia psych. So great.
