I think "Summer Night City" is great as it is, without intro and with the "enormous" amounts of compression – it's a bit like Ringo's drums on Revolver, over the top but perfectly fitting and it sounds good. It does evoke a Stockholm summer night for sure, when you leave the nightclub and it's all light outside (come here and check it out!)

    "Summer Night City"

The bastard child of ABBA's hits; only just cracking the Top 5 in Britain, withdrawn in America and banished to More ABBA Gold in favor of "One of Us". (Of course, since our view of the kings and queens of Europop is filtered through Britain, no one mentions it was their last chart topper at home)

I kind of like how Benny and Björn just gave up on the song and dialed up the compressor, giving it a bit of an edge. Also, how Björn is just as prominent as the girls.

The group fell into disco quite nicely.

I will ask who's bright idea it to was put that folk melody on the B-side.

I would rather say that it was banished to 'More ABBA Gold' in favour of 'Thank You for the Music'. ABBA had 19 UK top 10 hits, 'ABBA Gold' features 18 of them plus 'TYFTM', 'Summer Night City' was the only top 10 single that was left out.

I hadn't heard "Summer Night City" until now. It's not actually a bad song, but I can understand why they were unhappy with it - there is something not quite right about how the words mesh with the music.

It sounds to be a lot like "The Visitors" (song), but I prefer the latter. Possibly with that song they thought "Let's do something like Summer Night City, but properly this time."

I agree that this is a wonderful song, with perhaps a few hooks too many! But I love listening to it, maybe for all those little hooks that you forget were ever there. It certainly has a lot of the ABBA magic in terms of the sound. Yes, I agree that they never got the mix just right, and maybe it would have been easier if the song were actually split into to different songs - there´s just so much going on!

Having said that - I love the energy, the vocals and all the myriad ideas in the song. It stands out in their catalogues as one of their more inventive songs. And that´s saying something! I may like "GIMMEI GIMME! GIMME! (A MAN AFTER MIDNIGHT)" better as a "proper" ABBA disco song, and "VOULEZ-VOUS" is funkier, but "SUMMER NIGHT CITY" has a magic of its own.

I happen to prefer the long version, though I agree that the switch from ballad intro to disco main song is too abrupt. The best version, I think, is the live version. The opening has that mystical, almost Clannad/Enya-like quality, and the first disco beats really jump out.

    Anyway, love the song!

The B side is inessential, many might feel, but it´s great fun. Love to hear them going wild on other people´s songs. Sounds like they had a god time.

    Dancing Queen
I didn't hear this until 1977, but it was still on the charts. Again, it's that compression and thick-layered sound. What's not to love? I never thought of it as a disco record, either. I don't know anyone who did at the time. I think a lot of this 'disco" labelling came from long after-the-fact.

    Money, Money, Money
A minor U.S. hit. It got played on the radio, but not for long.

    Knowing Me, Knowing You
The first ABBA 45 I actually bought. To me, it sounded very mature, and had a different type of arrangement from what we were used to hearing from the band. It was like they were trying to advance their sound. Unless i'm mistaken, the band was starting to go through interpersonal relationship problems at this point.

    The Name Of The Game
I only knew the album/single version they played on the radio, so for many years, I was quite upset that all we would get on most ABBA comps is an edited radio version. It's always a treat to hear it.

    Take A Chance On Me
Aggghhhh! I'm still sick of hearing this one! I never liked it then, and i'm not crazy about it now. I always skip it. But, it is ABBA's most popular U.S. hit. It seemed like radio played it every hour on the hour.

I love "Summer Night City". I love the heavy compression they added to it. Too bad the majority of listeners don't feel like I do.

Well, I hate to disillusion you - get it? - but it has been known for quite a while that Agnetha used to swear like a (super) trouper. So it wouldn´t have been out of character for them to swear.

But to release it on a single? No. They were too smart for that.

I love SNC too. But it does sound kind of harsh on CD as compared to vinyl.

Well, it certainly ups the drama quotient to ABBA-appropriate levels.

"Summer Night City" - one of two ABBA songs where the chorus does not live up to the verses.
If they did - they would have been much, much better songs.

The other is "The King Has Lost His Crown" - could have been top 5 ABBA for me if the chorus was even 1/2 as good as the verses.

Well, the BBC initially thought so too and it got temporarily banned from the airwaves until they finally got clarification from Epic/Polar a few weeks later. This explains why it stalled at #5 as its momentum had been lost in all that time.

I love this tune (with the extra intro too) as it has some personal resonance for me in my early 'first stepping out' days in the summer of 1994. Always got played just before I headed to the clubs, especially just to hear the lines "I love the feeling in the air/my kind of people everywhere". When I finally got to Stockholm for our 'Winter Night City' trip, we recreated it in the dawning hours after a night at HMS Patricia! True story! (RIP James Doyle, our valet & friend on that magical trip)

Still get the same rush when I hear it now. Happy times!

I love Summer Nights City. Benny and Bjorn are wrong, wrong, wrong. The song is a stone ABBA classic. The vocal harmonies are beyond amazing. Brian Wilson would have been proud to write a song like SNC. I can't rave enough about the quality of this song. The B side however .....

Totally agree. This has gone to joint #1 in my personal top 10. There is something about the melody and vocal arrangement that is unique and really appeals to me. I remember in the 70s how it sort of left a lot of people cold, and I still can't figure it out. The reason I never bought Abba Gold was because this wasn't on it. Since it wasn't on VV it should have been a definite for that compilation.
It is surely the black sheep of Abba's hits.

I've always loved the drive and "feel" of Summer Night City, even though intellectually something's not quite right with it. But why think when you can dance!

In New Zealand this wonderful track was a dud, spending a mere one week on the charts at #37. The albums still went top 5 through to Super Trouper.

It's video of ABBA actually recording "Dancing Queen" in the studio, shot for a Stig Anderson documentary.

I think the song "Voulez Vous" also falls into that category. I could probably think of others if I took the time.
Unfortunately it's a fairly common failing with songwriters. It's as though they spend a lot of effort making a really good verse to get you sucked in, then they think "Hmm, it needs a chorus" and for the chorus they just use the first thing they come up with that sounds kind of OK.

I don't think that that story is true. My understanding is that Epic was concerned about the alleged f**king and produced a radio promo with an early fade.

Medley was issued as the B-side because they didn't have anything else available. It was also subjected to very heavy compression, which threw the mix so far off balance that it was thought for many years that the song had been remixed for the single!

You can tell they did a lot of rearranging by editing. It's also interesting how "American" they could sound when singing in English. They were obviously going for the U.S. market here.

Question for anyone: has the complete unedited version ever turned up as commercially available? I'd like to get that.

Here, I am posting a list of dynamics measurements for a bunch of ABBA stuff, showing how terrible the ABBA complete studio recordings and the discography are without proper expansion. (I mean, the studio version is highly compressed.) Luckily, their compression is standard DBX style RMS compression -- so it is easy to undo. Here are the numbers:

    Code:
Processed -- ABBAstudio using the uncompressor.
ABBAstudio -- direct from the TCSH (complete studio)
ABBAdiscography -- direct from the ABBA discography
ABBAvinyl -- from a vinyl copy

The ABBAstudio & ABBAdiscography direct are highly compressed.
The 'Processed' version of ABBAstudio is cleaner than ABBA vinyl,
but less dynamic range than vinyl (but better than ABBAstudio or ABBAdiscography alone.)
The vinyl version has more dynamic range, but generally more distortion.

I think Summer Night City was the victim of a particularly strong period for music - the rest of the top 10 chart at the time is full of songs that are regarded as pop classics. Usually you see these charts with ABBA and most of the top 10 is unmemorable, forgotten songs, but not in the summer of '78
