I keep going back to Plastic Ono Band to see what I'm missing. I want to elevate it past superb but always get hung up on "Remember" and "Look At Me". Cut those two songs and it would be on my top 100. But, obviously, can't cut those two! :D

Edit: I've been listening to album and have reached "Remember" and...unbelievably have attained a breakthrough. Am no longer hung up on this one. Just one more to go.

I'm not going with "better", because you can't compare or try to equate something recorded in 1970 (i.e. All Things Must Pass) with what the band did in 1963 (i.e. With The Beatles).

But if we want to talk about solo albums that are on a par with the catalog, then I would throw these forward in no particular order:

    1. Paul "Band On The Run"
    2. Paul "Ram"
    3. John "Imagine"
    4. John "Plastic Ono Band"
    5. George "All Things Must Pass"
    6. George "Living In The Material World"
    7. George "Cloud 9"
    8. Ringo "Ringo"
    9. Paul "Chaos And Creation In The Backyard"

Let it Be was just an audition for their solo careers.

Well maybe not but I listen to and enjoy it way more than LIB. If I had to grab one of the two in a fire it would be ATMP.

Yes, can we just stop with the acronyms and take some time to type out the whole title? Sure, it's easier for you, but when the rest of us are reading your posts, we have to stop and try to figure out what each acronym is -- or give up and move on to another thread, which is what I'm going to do right now.

I apologize. That can be annoying to me too if I don’t recognize it.

:D Well, there you go. We're all different. (I hope you don't offer out the lyrics of Look At Me as an example of Lennon at his best, though!)

I have to say, “None”. I believe it was the chemistry the four guys had as the Beatles that made their albums better than the solo efforts.

My opinion of the early albums The Beatles released is each have a couple really strong tracks, but as whole albums they are pretty easy to beat by the best of the solo releases. They are extremely easy to equal by many of even the middling solo releases. By late 1966 to 1970 they were at the top of their game, and I don't think any of the solo albums better those efforts.

And the 79/80 Lennon sessions when his material is combined from Double Fantasy and Milk and Honey.

Yeah I was about to say Remember is a great one.
Look at Me is just him still struggling which is the the entire artistic expression of the album.

There are many solo albums better than YELLOW SUBMARINE

So instead I'll mention those I think are better than PLEASE PLEASE ME, WITH THE BEATLES, and BEATLES FOR SALE:

    John:
    PLASTIC ONO BAND
(if you put his songs from DOUBLE FANTASY and MILK AND HONEY into one album that's better too)

    Paul:
    RAM
    BAND ON THE RUN
    TUG OF WAR
    FLAMING PIE

    George:
    ALL THINGS MUST PASS

The following are as good as PPM, WTB, and BFS:

    John:
    IMAGINE

    Paul:
    VENUS AND MARS
    MEMORY ALMOST FULL

    George:
    GEORGE HARRISON
    CLOUD NINE

    Ringo:
    RINGO

I would put Ram, plastic ono, band on the run, and chaos on the list of my favorite albums, but they would be above any Beatles albums except yellow submarine and with the Beatles.

"Give My Regards to Broad Street" is far better than "Sgt. Pepper." Or the White Album.

Both of those albums are twice as good as Let It Be and as good as the White Album in my opinion.

Even the 'weakest' Beatles albums have songs no solo album can top. I mean what song on Flaming Pie could possibly be better than Eight Days a Week?

Magical thinking. If you really believe this, that’s fine. But you are in the 1%.

    No, not that 1%!!

I would say that ATMP, POB, Ram, BOTR, and Ringo are as good as lesser Beatles albums...but better than the weakest ones.

I don't expect it. I just don't think the albums he did make have enough grit and emotional variety. For the same reason, though, John's and George's don't have enough color or musical variety. You need both.
