Any Johnny Paycheck fans over here? What country music would you recommend to someone who’s a fan of Johnny? Thanks in advance.

I was just listening to Paycheck last night! One of my favorites.

David Allan Coe is definitely in the same honky tonk. I'd highly recommend Gary Stewart, he was great.

Pretty much anyone who got slapped with the Outlaw Country label in the 70s should give you your money's worth: Waylon and Willie of course, but also Tompall Glaser, Billy Joe Shaver, Jerry Jeff Walker, etc.

Paycheck of course gained much momentum in the 70's with the outlaw period, but a lot will
swear by his early mid 60's 'little darlin' years as the golden era for Paycheck.
Some of us have been fighting for a complete box set of his early years for..... years!
There are a few good Cd's around, but are increasingly hard to find and/or out of print.
    I'd recommend:
    Bear Family's 'Shakin' The Blues'.
Nowhere To Run: Omni Record Company

Thanks for the replies. I also like Waylon Jennings but Johnny Paycheck was the first country artist that blew my mind. Haven’t heard some of the above mentioned, would love to check them out.

I really dig his early 70's stuff too, before he became full on commercial outlaw like many did.
David Allan Coe, Waylon all gravitated and lived up to that image that was cast upon them.
However, I think the magic was in the lead up.
This is a favourite of mine:

It's a pity as of 2018, his 3 albums for Epic between 1973 - 75 have not been released on Cd.

Slightly off-topic but would love to know what were the musical influences of Johnny Paycheck. What were the artists that he praised during his lifetime? The best artists that i’ve ever discovered were ones that have been mentioned by my favorite musicians.

He and George Jones were pretty well joined to the hip. It would be an interesting discussion on who inspired
who more. George even paid the Johnny's funeral when he died.
    Lifelong friends.

Rick Bartlett, I also remember reading somewhere that he loved Lefty Frizzell, although it’s hard to think of any (decent) country music that is not influenced by him.

When he was initially known as Donny Young, Johnny Paycheck performed in a duo called The Young Brothers with fellow country legend Darrell McCall. For more info on Darrell McCall:

Definitely, Rick. Each of us need to take 5 minutes per day to flood the inboxes of our favorite reissue labels. I could visualize BGO Records releasing 2CD fourfers as they've done with Charley Pride.

If you want an easy reference point to the quality of Paycheck's music it's all in the facial hair: no facial hair and he's at his most manic and menacing, this is his best quality period at Little Darling and pre, moustache and he's moving into a more mainstream country groove with plenty of quality still, full beard outlaw look and we're into Take This Job and Koolade nonsense, lots to enjoy still for sure but nowhere near the groundbreaking music of the 60s - drinking, womanising, murder, nuclear war, mental health, you name it. Great stuff.

In a nutshell (and when I say nut...) If you see anything with Paycheck and Little Darlin' on record or CD buy it.

This is a collection LP, look at the man though, he's quite a small guy but that look tells you he's gonna have a go and probably 'take you'.

Yep, you know Johnny was a small guy when George Jones almost towers over John.
A couple sticks of dynamite right there. Two guys you wouldn't wanna mess with on any given day!

I'll correct myself before someone else does....
According to wiki, George Jones paid for Johnny's plot, but his funeral and burial were paid by former
    manager Glenn Ferguson.
