RIP, Mr. Fontana. What a world!

  3. An amazing talent, and was integral to getting this thing called rock 'n roll off to a rollicking start. His playing was the perfect fit for all those seminal records. I mean, the guy played on Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel, Jailhouse Rock, Love Me, My Baby Left Me, All Shook Up, Teddy Bear, It's Now Or Never, and so many others. Wow.

People who are not even born yet will one day dance to DJ's beat. That is a legacy.

And with that, the end of an era. Four amazing talented men, now all passed and reunited in the great beyond, that were part of an incredible music explosion that changed my life, along with the lives of so many others: past, present and future. #longliverockandroll

Had the good fortune of seeing Mr. Fontana as part of a mind-blowing Elvis 53rd birthday tribute show in Atlantic City in January 1988:
    • Roy Orbison
    • Carl Perkins
    • Charlie Rich
    • The Jordanaires
    RIP, D.J.

Great drumming, from such a basic kit. It's not all about having 7 toms and 30+ cymbals, it's really about feel and groove.

    RIP DJ.

RIP DJ, wow 87 and what amazing journey!

  19. Funny thing about that photo is that he doesn't have a bottom drum skin on the mounted tom, but still has the bottom rim in place.

Here's a more recent pick of that kit (a Gretsch):

As the drummer on so many great and historically important records, DJ Fontana may be dead but he's gonna outlive us all.
    RIP DJ and thank you.
