Next Jeff Bridges film: Bad Times at the El Royale

Maybe you're like me, in that I'm always interested in what Bridges does next. he generally picks some pretty good films, and often, they're a bit challenging. This one looks interesting. I kind of thought this trailer was going one way, then it went a different way.

 

I stopped it where the guy came through the door. That was enough for me to want to see it. I do not like knowing much before watching something. I want surprises.

I saw this yesterday, I enjoyed it. But at 2:20 it needed some editing. Jeff Bridges as usual brings the memorable one liners. Hamm is Hamm. I didn't see any of the 50 Shades installments but I could see becoming a Dakota Johnson fan after this. I couldn't help but feel Hemsworth was doing his best young Brad Pitt impression. The soundtrack helps move the 2:20 along, and the use of Deep Purple's Hush was a highlight in the film for me, great syncing with what was happening on the screen.

As long as you can stand a slow paced film, I think this is a winner, not in a box office smash type of way, but surely entertaining imo.

 

I'll hope it's good, considering it's from the same guy who made "Cabin In The Woods"!!!!

 

I saw this Tuesday night at a preview screening. I LOVED it. A little slow to start, a little indulgent and slow in parts, but overall I thought it was great. It's got lots of humor along with fun twists and turns.

 

Saw it yesterday and thought it was great, very noirish. Since the suspense was sometimes too much to really take in the stunning set, I definitely need to watch this again next week.

 

I saw it yesterday and really liked it. One of those rare movies where the trailer got me interested, but there was a lot more going on than the trailer showed.

It is a bit more violent and Tarrantino-esque than I would have guessed had I not read a review that said so. This may have turned me off if I weren't excpecting it.

 

A few bits made me jump in my seat more than supposed horror films.
Lots of twists.
Like period films more than current era stuff.

I think I'll check behind the mirrors next time I stay in a hotel.

 

I REALLY enjoyed this film, far more than the pics getting all the press right now (Star is Born, First Man)...

I first saw the trailer for this when I went to see that last Jodie Foster movie..."Hotel Artemis"
glad to hear it's better that THAT!

 

I liked Hotel Artemis, but there is no comparison. This one is much better.

 

It really looks like a Tarantino movie to me.

Saw it last night. It's good. I almost teared up at the ending.

Gorgeous cinematography. Color graded to perfectly match '70's Esquire magazines of that era (I'm a former graphic artist). Has a very distinct film noir detective tone and pacing. Very filmic softness to the overall picture. It's shot on 35mm film.

The actors look like they fit in that era which makes it more credible. Tarantino-esque dialog just not as stylistically pretentious as Pulp Fiction. IOW there's no meandering, self indulgent dialog about what hamburgers are called in foreign countries.

 

Me too. (I thought I was the only one.)

 

Just going by the ads it seems like one of those neo-noir "hipster violence" movies that sprang up in the wake of Pulp Fiction's success.

 

You mean 24 years ago? Hmmm.

 

I have to be honest, I'm a sucker for anything Bridges appears in. He's a brilliant actor and makes even the lesser films he has appeared in worthwhile.

 

I think he's totally right. Pulp Fiction practically spawned a whole new genre of movie that are still being made. Nearly 75% of the reviews for this movie actually mention Tarantino by name. Which... sort of confirms Mr. Morris point.

 

Yeah, I saw those other two Sunday. Wish I’d seen El Royale instead.

 

IOW still people yakkin' about nothing, but it's slightly more generic nothing?

Is it more Seinfeld or more Tarantino?

 

Sounds like he hasn't put the marbles in his mouth for this film.
