Those years draw a blank for me, as far as music.

Orwell predicted the winner over half a century ago: 1984. Though a year before my planetary debut, the combination of music and music-related events are unimpeachable.

    Albums
    Smiths/Smiths
    Hatful of Hollow/Smiths
    Murmur/REM
    Meat Puppets II/Meat Puppets
    Legend/Bob&The Wailers
**These 5 are enough for me, but wait, the year was also a heavy metal high water mark...

    Powerslave/Maiden
    Defenders/Priest
    Ride the Lightning/Metallica
    '74 Jail Break/ACDC
    No Remorse/Motorhead
    Love at First Sting/Scorpions
**These 6 alone might seal the deal, but wait, from the GenPop arena we have....

    Unforgettable Fire/U2
    Like a Virgin/Madonna
    USA/Springsteen
    Purple Rain/Prince
    1984/Van Halen
*But wait ("everyone I know has a big 'but'" - pee wee), from the Miscellany file...

    Heartbeat City/Cars (u might think & drive!)
    Building the Perfect Beast/Henley
    Word of Mouth/Kinks
    ProsConsHitchhiking/Roger Waters
    Milk&Honey/J&Y
    Reckless/Bryan Adams
Stay Hungry/Twisted Sister (anthemic singles: we're not gonna take & I wanna rock)

But wait....still dubious? How about "This is Spinal Tap". Honestly. No? Now you're getting greedy. Still, if we haven't reached a preponderance of evidence in your mind, consider more musicalia from the Silver Screen: Amadeus, Purple Rain, and - I really don't get this one, but it'll surely play to the natives - Give My Regards to Broad Street (stick to the album version to avoid contracting hives from a toxically pointless screen play).

Finally, even now, 30+ years later, the meeting of J, Lou, and Murph in formation of Dinosaur Jr. might be the single most resonating event from 1984 for me personally. Also, don't forget the short-lived collaboration of Page&Rodgers in The Firm, though that remarkable debut album was a year in the offing./K

I probably got a little carried away with the lists, but it was hard just to narrow the selections to 15 per year. Best year? I guess I'd go with 1984. Maybe. :sigh:

I could have picked any three years from 1982-87, but after a bit of thought I went with '82, because synthpop was starting to get good once that New Wave stuff was cleared away, '84 for having some of my decade favourites like Hollow Horse by the Icicle Works, and '87 because it was the year I started collecting British imports in earnest (from reading Melody Maker and NME) and I found a lot of nice stuff I would not have heard otherwise. Nothing against '83, '85 or '86 though.

That is what I did in the Mid 1990s that helped me discover some great New Music Artists from the UK(also discovered great Music with the Free End of Year 'Best of' Sampler CDs that came with 'Q', 'Mojo' & 'Uncut' Magazine and reading their Top albums of the Year Lists).

    I guess this poll isn't for me. 1967 - 1973 or so. :)

Although there's some good guitar indie rock from the '90s that's particularly good.

  19. Two Sheds

    I'm a nineties kid, I went with 1991, 1994 and 1997.

I am surprised 1987 is not doing better, that was a pretty massive year with some huge blockbuster albums (Michael Jackson-Bad, George Michael-Faith, Def Leppard-Hysteria, Inxs-Kick).

I think that there was a lot of great music released in the 80's but apart from REM & The Replacements there is very little on your list that excites me.
I could provide a very different list just as long which highlights the diversety that you mention.

The answer to the original question. There is no best year. They are all good There is great music released every year.
