Why did Allan Clarke insist on frequently performing bare chested throughout the 70s?

It's always seemed a bit odd to me, and surely stood out a bit at the time. Can anyone explain his motivations?

He was trying to compete with Roger Daltrey? ;)

Hollies and Who weren't exactly going for the same market by the seventies though :sigh:

Gotta give Rog credit for being in incredible shape at any age!

The bare chest image was probably the same reason Allan Clarke next began wearing Donny Osmond's style stage clothes , had the frizzy perm and wore earring

compare Clarke's far better (for his age) 'cool' shirt, jeans and jean jacket look on say the cover of 'Hollies Greatest vol 2' album in 1972...

....to his utterly absurd 'trying to appear hip' look on say 'Hollies Live Hits' rear cover pic of 1976

the bare chested look was part of his 'Macho image' idea I suspect - coming just as the years caught up with him looks wise made even worse by Tony Hicks and Terry Sylvester each looking younger and dressing with sense and style back then...!

Silly me — I thought this was a music forum, not Playgirl or Tiger Beat!

Guess that all makes sense - his efforts to remain relevant certainly do seem a bit pointless in the face of Tony Hicks seemingly hardly aging from 20 through 50!

It's a shame they were stuck with Clarke, really, I think - Rickfors was a lot younger, cooler and better-sounding - particularly in terms of being ready for AOR and Stadium rock, as well as being as strong a songwriter and probably a better guitarist. I get the feeling Clarke had quite the ego.

At least he could put a shirt on - but the perm was absurd.

We could probably do a whole thread on rock stars of the 70s and their bad perms.

Loads of frontmen went bare-chested in the seventies.

Has gone a little off course, I'll admit. What can you do, need to keep posting after all.

Loads of UK acts were wearing bad perms even back in the 60s, including Allan Clarke, members of Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Move...

Sure glad loads of others did NOT try it...

Incandescent stage lights were very hot. People would start the show fully clothed and remove the shirt after it became too soaked to wear.
