Last night I picked up: The Night Of The Hunter Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders The Breakfast Club Rumble Fish
Yes, and I'm also about to cue up the soundtrack after the current song I'm listening to ends. I really need to pick up Black Moon before the sale ends. That's another weird, dreamlike film I love but don't own.
Yeah, the Valerie soundtrack is terrific. Do you know Morgiana? Another mad film of the Czech New Wave that I really enjoy. Not sure it’s available in Region 1/A; certainly not on Criterion.
I'm often in awe, amusement and, well, bewilderment about these sagging shelves in your collections. I have a very heavy list of shows to watch, via downloading, DVR or that big stack of movies I once wanted, over there. And am I gonna ever get to 'em all, in time that I have life left to spend digging into the Criterion library? Lemme get back to you on that...sometime before I'm unable to lift the remote, hopefully... But I see these great releases I know are great, and I see those not available anywhere else, that I've heard are great, and I see all the others that supposedly are right up my alley, so I really, really, really, really, really- (well, actually, when push comes to shove, I don't want - but I've got a shelf here waiting, so when the bomb drops I'll have the properly-colored, funniest-commentary, most-complete-edit versions of these classics, ooh, right there in a stack, just waiting for me to make time to dig in down in my bomb shelter, while the rest of the world goes to Handbasket Heaven). Criterion sure brings out the "collector"-rather-than-"consumer" impulse in us. I can just go through the catalog (or website, or whatever) and count the ones I want...but for some reason I can't plan out exactly when I'll be ready to watch them, either alone, or with my friends in the bunker, or with a grandkid who desperately wants me to stop talking about it and put in Transformers Meet Pacific Rim Fast & Furiously...I just don't see a hole in my schedule. But, BOY, would these all look COOL, sitting next to all my Pixars....! ...gathering dust....
Kept my spending down this time because fireworks killed me earlier in the week. Got Night Of The Living Dead and Carnival Of Souls.
Plenty of people have addressed this and I can't argue against it. They often release stellar products but do seem to cater to impulsive collectors. The overwhelming majority of their catalog I could probably do without ever seeing or at the very least catch a few on stream. But the ones they do release that you really enjoy, it's nice to have in reference quality with supplemental material.
Wow, there's a Criterion Black Moon? One of my favorite weird films! I probably need Valerie more though... never felt like I was really 'getting' half of what was in that one.

I went back to my Barnes & Noble store with a friend of mine & saw they stocked another movie I wanted. I was proud of myself because I put it back in the rack & left it there. I stood there for about 30 seconds & thought how I was able to do that. When I was done thinking, I took the movie up to the counter & bought it.
Small collection so far. Wish I didn't drop by the B&N site...once I start looking at these things it's hard to resist. Blu Ray Rosemary's Baby Dressed to Kill Blow Out The Game 12 Angry Men Dazed and Confused The Royal Tenenbaums Bottle Rocket The Ice Storm Gimme Shelter Being John Malkovich DVD Sisters Just ordered (all on BR): Thief Seconds Blood Simple Eraserhead Mulholland Dr. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
I have had a similar conversation regarding books many times with a friend who has a similarly large collection to my own. We have both, on various occasions, had that conversation with people who visit our respective houses and just have to ask "Have you read all of these books?", at which point the concept of a reference library is explained. My friend is fond of saying "I may not read [Book X] for many years, but some day when I wake up in the middle of the night and need [Book X], it will be right there on the shelf waiting for me." Criterion releases are a reference library for cinema.
I hadn't noticed until it was pointed out to me earlier today, but this one appears to be OOP now and the asking prices at the usual online vendors are insane. Anyone know what the deal is? Did Criterion's license from Paramount just lapse after a set period of time? Or could they be considering a Blu-ray upgrade - AFAIK, the only one of the titles in that set that has been released on Blu is THE LAST COMMAND, by Eureka/Masters of Cinema in Region B. I remember how eagerly anticipated this set was when it was announced, as those films had been much-desired on home video by silent aficionados for a very long time. DOCKS OF NEW YORK had only been released in the US on VHS, and UNDERWORLD on a Japanese laserdisc (as a double feature with DOCKS OF NEW YORK) from source material that was pretty subpar.
And, that makes us all wannabe librarians? Hey, what if we were instead to pool our money together, and finance one great big "reference library", where everybody access them all - and more! - for the benefit of all of us who may suddenly come to a question in the middle of the night, and "need" to look up what John Frankenheimer stated about Gregory Peck in that offhand comment during the 3rd documentary bonus in the Run Silent, Run Deep Anniversary Edition, and all you'd have to do is log in, access that particular file, listen to the entire interview, realise that he wasn't saying it about Gregory Peck, it was Peter Sellers...and then, satisfied you have taken advantage of this great, ever-so-useful resource...go back to sleep, conundrum answered. I guess what I'm still saying is, Californians just don't like public transportation, despite the traffic and pollution issues, because the bus doesn't go through the Starbucks drive-thru.
It truly is and it seems to have inspired other companies such as Arrow and Vinegar Syndrome to give similar treatment to classic exploitation and genre films. I don't know if the world needs a definitive edition of Lady Terminator but I certainly do.
Added these Criterion titles from B&N over the weekend; Blood Simple The Palm Beach Story Something Wild (1961) Five Easy Pieces
On my way tonight to B&N, hoping to get Dead Man, Night of the Living Dead, Female Trouble, Silence of the Lambs, and Virgin Spring.
Saw a B&N after work project tonight before the 4th holiday. Picked up Election Blu-Ray...didn't expect it to become a Beatles post, but they still had 1 of the Yesterday & Today "Butcher Cover" sticker CD in the bin!
My B&N was seriously picked over, they only had Female Trouble on Blu-Ray. They had no signage or displays for the sale though. I'll probably hit up another one today.
