Archie Shepp Quartet Splashes from '87 on CD with Horace Parlan, Clifford Jarvis & Harry Emmery. Parlan has some beautiful passages in these songs. One of those forgotten jazz releases from back in the day.
Both Directions At Once | The Lost Album | Deluxe Edition - John Coltrane (Impulse!) 2CD with John Coltrane (tenor & soprano sax), McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison(bass), Elvin Jones (drums) Recorded 1963 So glad I opted for the deluxe edition as I have just listened to both discs back to back and all the music (and versions) are a must, and everything is presented in great sound too. I'm in two minds about the packaging. In general I like it but I do have some issues with how the discs are housed (a minor irritation). There's a 16 page booklet included with all the relevant info.
Does the booklet contain the essay by Ashley Kahn like the deluxe LP does? Very interesting read if it does.

Been having a hankering for some Harrell lately. This is just a wonderful album, and I do mean album because it sounds to me like a lot of care was spent on sequencing and pacing, it is presented like the albums of old in that way, and all the better for it. Harrell seduces you with the sweet bossa-influenced opener and just keeps pulling you in deeper and deeper throughout. A remarkably amount of ground is covered, but in a natural/organic way, so that by the end you're in some pretty "out" territory but you've gotten there so gradually you never realized just how far you'd gotten. An all time classic, beautifully recorded, released in 1998 on the RCA Victor label and featuring a long list of top flight players in various configurations - Greg Tardy, Gary Smulyan, tenor great Dewey Redman, Regina Carter, Danilo Perez, David Sanchez, Mike Stern (in cracking form!), Makanda Ken McIntyre, Bryan Carrott, among others.
"Wheatland" from that suite is simply lovely, a favorite of mine. This is an album to play for people who insist on portraying Peterson as a showy no feeling player.
Wow, this version of What Is This Thing Called Love is something else. NP: Keith Jarrett - Whisper Not
