I got the Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" super deluxe package from Amazon the other day.

Everything about the package is in good shape - except for the mini-sleeves that hold the discs themselves.

    All 5 have small dents/creases.

I don't return a lot to Amazon so I'm not especially concerned they'll "cut me off" if I send back the product, but I'm also loathe to push it for damage that isn't major.

All the sleeves look like the one in the attached photo - or worse, as a couple have dents elsewhere as well.

Keep the set as is or return for one in better shape?

It's a judgement call. Does that kind of thing really bother you, or are you mostly there for the music anyway--but you are annoyed you paid the price of a new item and got one decidedly less than perfect? This is clearly an issue with the manufacturer, not with Amazon or their packaging. So returning it to "teach Amazon a lesson" (a message they never hear anyway, incidentally) makes no sense. And music is sold one way from the manufacturer, so if you return it, the manufacturer also won't get the message (Amazon will eat any loss).

If you think you'll try to sell it eventually, something closer to perfect would make that easier. But if you figure you'll just hold on to it "forever" then that's not a concern.

If you rarely return anything, then you'd be OK with this return. But is it worth the hassle to you?

Not much of a hassle - Amazon makes it pretty easy.

I do feel like I paid for a new item and should get one that's in mint condition.

Not doing this to teach Amazon - or anyone else - a "lesson". Would do it to get a product in mint condition!

Unless Jeff Bezos silently lurks on these forums, I doubt that any lessons will be heard, never mind learned.

Like I said, I didn't start the thread to teach anyone a lesson.

Just curious to ask if people thought this damage was worth a return or not!

Sensible. The return process is done the way it is, not just to make money on a sale that somehow went wrong. It's to keep their reputation for being fair, out there where future purchases are made.

If it was me, I wouldn’t return it.

If you email them or through live contact. Tell them the problem, they may give you a partial discount say 20%. I have had damaged stuff before that is OK, just not mint due to some damage. They always offer, except twice when I asked for it. For that damage, a 20% discount would be fine.

Speaking personally, those creases probably would not bother me enough to justify a return. Like Felix said, you could probably get a decent-enough discount if you were to contact Amazon about the issue via chat. YMMV, of course.

I just got a t shirt there, that redefines the concept of, “double X”...but if it fits the spouse, I will keep it and ding them for it on feedback. Best of both worlds...

I just received the new Buffalo Springfield box set & it had a very tiny crease in one corner; I'd have to point it out to people. I've bought tons of new & used CD sets in my time. A small mark or crease is just what happens when you aren't buying it in person. I've learned to live with it...

Why would anyone think that Amazon would somehow cut them off for returning items? If it's damaged, it's damaged. It you paid for a new, mint item, then that's what you should have. Being scared to send something back is just ridiculous. You pay for a service. It doesn't matter if you plan to sell it in the future or not. What if, in five or ten years time, this set is selling for £200. And yours is worth 20% of that because you were scared of sending it back? The truth is that we don't know what the future holds, or how our money situation will be in years to come. Crap happens. So get yourself the copy you deserve.

because it's a well-established fact that they do cut people off.

thankfully in this case, i'm sure that won't happen.

Yeah, I'm not really concerned that Amazon will give me Le Boot if I send back this item. I mean, because I know their policy, that lurks in the back of my monkey brain, but it's not the reason for my hesitation.

It's more not wanting to be a jerk, honestly. There's a fine line between demanding a return because something's genuinely damaged - like the "Wings Over America" super-deluxe I got from Amazon that had a huge dent on the box - and something that's got theoretically modest damage like this.

Price obviously becomes a factor - ie, I'm more likely to be upset by any form of damage for something that cost me $120 vs. $40.

But I'm still disappointed that there's some damage to this set.

I just meant to use this thread as a "poll" to inform my actions and tell me if I was being too nitpicky or if my "complaint" was valid...

Seeing the damage to that package, I would probably have returned it without opening it. If I unwrapped it and discovered the damage inside (which may be what you're showing us, I'm not sure) then I'd also probably return it. To me, that's the preferable option if it's cosmetic damage to the package itself. With a box set like that, the packaging is definitely a big part of what you're paying for.

If I'd have bought it at a discount from their Warehouse Deals section, I would just keep it because that kind of damage is why you get it at a discount. But full price and that dinged up? Send it back.

Not a "warehouse deal" - it was sealed.

No damage obvious until I opened the package. The set comes with a vinyl-sized sleeve - probably because it includes vinyl too! ;) - with the CDs in mini-sleeves stuck in cardboard pockets.

The exterior "case" and the sleeve look fine, but when I opened it, the mini-sleeves with the CDs all had fallen out of their pockets and they all had the kind of damage depicted in the photo I included.

They play fine, so the only damage is cosmetic on the mini-sleeves...

Really, just because for me it's small enough where it wouldn't bother me, but again, that's just me.

You certainly are within your rights to get the product you paid for in the condition you expected it to be in.

You could also look at it that Amazon may want you to let them know you weren't 100% satisfied. If there is a recurring problem with one of their suppliers, they can't do anything about it if they don't know.
