Well, June has been repeatedly traumatized and was about to give birth, so I understand why she wouldn't be thinking strategically. She's in panic/survival mode almost all the time

In real life Gilead, rather than the rebels, would use both Springsteen and Oprah as propaganda.

Hulu has the preview of the next episode as a separate video and it will answer your question. The same preview is on YouTube.

Just out of curiosity, how would that work to hook up a 12v car battery to a 110v garage door opener with the door frozen shut?

It's TV. It would have worked!! She needed MacGuyver.

On my garage door there's a override switch on the top of the door in case of blackouts. Just click the switch and manually open the door.

  9. Or how about this: on the outside of each one of those garage doors was a handle (assuredly with a keyhole in the center, as I haven't seen them any other way), which demonstrates that she could have opened the garage door manually.

I haven't seen a garage door like this in a long time, because I guess if you can pick the lock you can rotate the handle and open the garage. But yeah, that was probably a small gaff in the show. That was June's way to get out.

It was a really good episode. Again, when this show fires on all cylinder it competes with the best of them.

I still fail to see how June's "small triumphs" justifies the outright torture pornography of the show. It's kooky because this season we've seen Mr. Waterford soften her cervix by raping the hell out of her, and this episode we watch her give birth naked and alone. Great use of flashbacks to Hannah's birth, by the way. Still, there are no triumphs here.

Maybe it will be a triumph if the person(s) who just arrived takes her to Canada, or takes her baby somewhere safe. What's the over/under on that, though?

I'm out. This show sucks the big one. Someone referred to it as "misery porn". I couldn't agree more. Enough is enough.

Are you talking about The Handmaid's Tale or the evening news?

But it wasn't just a matter of opening the door, the door was jammed from the outside with snow and ice, so it was also stuck solid.

And it's not like June was in calm, analytical mode. She was heavily pregnant (due any day or moment), desperate to get away before someone came by while also fearing for her life and her baby's from circling wolves! Her adrenaline levels and stress would have been off the chart! She did fine under the circumstances.

    this.

  15. Perhaps I needed to explain myself better. The gaff would be that they didn't show her try a key in the handle. Instead she went straight to taking a shovel to the underside of the garage door.

Anyway, it really is a nitpick. I thought the episode was wonderfully moribund with some great action.

I thought the whole episode was going to be just her walking around the house (if it was The Sopranos or The Wire they would have attempted it). It just shows how the average person's attention span has diminished since the 90s

Is it too soon still to talk about last episode?

SPOILER ALERT. Episode 12 discussion coming.

Was legitimately moved by Eden's final scene. It was perfect for her. I wanted to hate her for her the nauseating repetition of Gilead's propaganda. The brainwashing was that deep, she unquestionably believed it. She may have only been a child, but she realized Nick didn't love her. And I sympathized with her for that. I thought the thing with the Guardian may have been her way to make Nick jealous. But that's not her character. She really loved the Guardian. As evidenced by her recitation of Corinthians (love is patient...). To date, the most powerful protest against Gilead we've seen came from Eden. This season has had its ups and downs but no one saw that coming.

Don't I now it! I had mused earlier in the season that Eden, with her brainwashing, was shaping up to be a 'psycho' that would turn in Nick & likely June for their lax adherence to protocols and standards of behavior, but instead her character development went off in an entirely unexpected direction. I love it when that happens because it means the narrative is unpredictable, and therefore interesting.

Speaking of unpredictable, what's the deal with Emily's new commander?? I seems like every commander's household is it's own version of a little shop of horrors.

Another touching scene to end the episode. There have been so many this season.

I was pretty disappointed in the story line, as Offred goes from being alone in that house, to being back locked up with the Waterfords yet again. Kinda glad they got rid of that mousey kid, I didn't want to watch her anymore :hide:...

Disappointing story lines. Exactly. And the obviously confused showrunner thinks he's going to squeeze 8 more seasons out of this misery porn.

  24. You know, it's been said that Serena is the most hated woman on TV right now - that she's a villain of the highest class and order - but in this world, if she emits a Jekyll & Hyde persona, I don't think it's because she's particularly villainous, as many say, but that she's in survival mode, as is everyone else. It's only that Serena's station in life put her in a position to choose from more available choices, yet she's very much in bondage, as well.

    What are these choices, though?

Serena was a strong woman with a powerful voice before Gilead. She quickly discovered that she had backed the wrong horse. By that time it was too late. The only promise, the only choice from that moment on was to hold out for a child. Otherwise, she has nothing. We can claim that her comforts are better than most, yet might she live with the constant discomfort that helped lay the groundwork for a biblical patriarchy that she clearly doesn't believe in and despises? Certainly she won't discard her creature comforts; perhaps those are the only things that give her succor, as little as that may be. Clearly she's in distress, though. The baby is that only promise of woman and motherhood that she can grasp for. If you back anybody into a corner for long enough, they'll run over anyone to get what they want. It's pure survival.

I'm not going to pull out the tiny violin for Serena, but I do see where she's coming from, and I certainly believe that she's redeemable. It's those Jekyll moments (and there have bee plenty), which shows that she's not too far gone. It's the Hyde moments that show us how desperate she is for any scrap of normality, especially sine she shoulders the blame for much of how Gilead is today.

I know it's kind of rinse and repeat, and we could think of many other storylines that could have happened, none of which would have been as powerful as we saw in the last episode. I was a little taken aback, too, but that quickly melted away.

If I have any quibble about this episode it's that Mrs. Waterford named the baby Nicole, which is a variant of Nickolas, or Nick, who is the father of the baby, and Fred Waterford knows this. Are we to believe that he's cool with this name, and he didn't realize that Mrs. Waterford is totally jacking with him? I would think that Fred would vetoed that name, outright. We know that he's milquetoast on the inside, but even a simpering noodle wouldn't stand for a public slap every time he walks out of the house. If it somehow got out that Nick is the father, with that name for the baby, he should know it would cripple him.

i still really love the show, but i definitely think 13 episodes was wholly unnecessary. aside from bradley whitford's character this episode pretty much stunk.
