They’re the years everyone hates. :D

All the #1’s of 1976 and half the charttoppers of 1977 as a bonus. I’d add the other half when I do the 1978 poll.

Interesting to see the reaction to some of these. I’m not expecting much!

Pick as many as you like!

  2. Only like Queen and Rod Stewart. Cant be doing with any of the others. Didnt like them then and have not warmed to them since. Sorry

Not even Slik featuring Midge Ure aged 12?!

ABBA - Mamma mia, Dancing Queen, Knowing You, Knowing Me
    Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
The Real Thing - You To Me Are Everything
The Four Seasons - December, 1963
Rod Stewart - I Don’t Want To Talk About It, The First Cut Is The Deepest

At the time I was into punk, Hendrix, Skynyrd, Lou Reed, Iggy,... but the above songs that I kind of appreciated.

    yarbles Too sick to pray

Looking at that list, and bearing in mind that most singles were bought by the younger generation, it's really difficult to understand how the UK yoot could ever have been that sick in the collective head.

I'm pleasantly surprised, but I like eight of them.

Topped by (in no particular order):

I Don’t Want To Talk About It/The First Cut Is The Deepest - Rod Stewart

    Dancing Queen - ABBA

    Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night) - The Four Seasons

And while I don't like Kenny Rogers, the one exception I have is this one -- Lucille

In this year (and a half), ABBA spent 17 weeks at #1.

I know we've had some spats , but it's mainly 80's stuff that I generally dislike (mostly due to my dislike of synths and especially synth drums).

My favorite era is 1963-1975, so I was a bit surprised to find so many on this list that I liked.

I have a U.S. "Dancing Queen" 45 single that, when I'm in the mood for it, is one of the most glorious-sounding things in my collection!

Just for @gomen ne, this is the best selling UK single of 1976. Spent 6 weeks at #1 and won that year’s Eurovision Song Contest too.

    I much like --

I Don’t Want To Talk About It/The First Cut Is The Deepest

-- but Rod the Mod would be jumping the shark (turning into Rod the MOR) shortly after this, IMO.

I liked You’re In My Heart (The Final Acclaim) from 1977, but then Rod had a few ‘disco’ years...

Something I've often wondered but never really looked in to.... Were Brotherhood Of Man simply an ABBA wannabe (but inferior on every level) band or did they have some sort of stand alone merit of their own?

    Genuine question....

I think they were somewhere between ABBA and the New Seekers.:D

They didn’t have ABBA’s gift for songwriting, arrangements and vocal harmonies, but they did have a blonde and a brunette woman!

BOM still managed 3 UK #1 singles, though.:yikes:

I love 1976, probably as I was 4 and its kind of my earliest memory, also that the music is so mixed. I kind of got back into '76 in my early 20s when they started showing old Top of the Pops episodes on a UK satellite TV channel late night - UK Gold, I used to record them on VHS and watch them back, love the mixed up time of MOR pop, disco and all round strangeness. Love that you have the likes of Sensational Alex Harvey band in the charts alongside Fox and 5000 Volts and Liverpool Express and Gallagher & Lyle.

    As for numbers 1's:

Slik, 4 Seasons, Abba, Real Thing, Pussycat, Chicago, Manhattan Transfer, Deniece Williams, Rod, hell i'll even vote for Demis. Great year!

I really enjoyed 1976 when BBC4 began showing TOTP a few years ago. It was the only year that was unaffected by the Savile/Yewtree scandal, IIRC.

This was one of the better chart toppers of 1976, IMO. It was a top 10 hit again a decade later.

Not sure if it was a US hit.

Sadly they didn't have the full year, believe it started around April 1976, but each year beyond has the yewtree issue with intermittent episodes unable to be shown.
