The Civil Wars by The Civil Wars (2013)

I am a huge Civil Wars fan. While both of the two records they released together are magical (Barton Hollow came first in 2011) I have a special place in my heart for the dark, ominous self-titled record from 2013. It is a breakup album in every sense of the word. Joy Williams and John Paul White are both extraordinarily talented singers and songwriters and I have solo records by them both, but together they had something extraordinary. Chemistry, vocal-blend, storytelling. It was all sensational. I still miss them. Fragile, gothic, Southern folk.

Here's "Dust to Dust" from this record:

Do they have to sing on the same song or can they just switch throughout the album?

Because I could take Dark Side of the Moon if latter is the case.

My favorite husband-wife duo is probably the late Iola & Sullivan Pugh, the Consolers. Sullivan was a great songwriter and the pairing was so raw. This is probably my favorite of their songs.

Easily my favorite male-female singing duo is Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell (my favorite Marvin Gaye records too are their records), with the great husband-wife songwriting team of Ashford & Simpson. I could pick any one of their hits but I'm going with this one:

Pretty in Black is my favorite — great intense retro rock.

It’s funny, the whole “mixed-gender duo” category has produced plenty of brilliant stuff but not a lot I can immediately fix on as great.

I’d say the absolute greatest I know of is Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.

Some faves: Nancy & Lee, Glen Campbell & Bobbie Gentry, Robert Plant & Sandy Denny, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, She & Him, Louis Prima & Keely Smith, George & Tammy, Susan Ann Sulley and Philip Oakley of Human League on “Don’t You Want Me"....
