His remaster of The Road Goes On Forever for Iconoclassic was just released Friday. It’s on my short list

Love his work. When I see his name attached to a project I know it will be worth having.

He did some Judas Priest recently. I think they sound great. Was hoping it was the start of him re-doing their whole catalog.

I have a lot of other discs that he mastered & love the sound on all of them.

Really? Which ones? I gave up on any decent CD remasters from JP after the last travesty.

The recent vinyl re-releases are done well though.

His work on the Elvis catalogue is uniformly great. His mix of Elvis’ concert from Las Vegas, 8/13/70 d.s. (FTD’s “The Wonder of You”) is the best concert mix in the Elvis catalogue.

I agree Essential was somewhat disappointing because I was hoping Vic could get magic out of those tapes. But bright, jarring and compressed seems to get applied around here to most CD. releases of older Kinks material: The Anthology, and the Deluxe Editions., for example. I give Vic a pass on Essential and it wasn’t so bad IMO. Just ok.

I greatly enjoy Vic's work and 99% of it is top notch. He's of those mastering engineers who has this knack for finding a balance between the warmth of analog and the clarity inherent in the original recording he's working on. He has done catalog remasters for both Elvis Presley & Johnny Cash, and both are excellent (although I confess I prefer the recent Charly remasters of the Cash Sun material). He is also one of the best mixing engineers out there IMO, and has a true talent at getting the style of the era of whatever recording he's working on right.

Like any engineer of course he has his dud or 2. Most I'd argue were either on request or because of whatever source tape he received. He also does sometimes end up taking out maybe a little too much of extraneous noises (talking about voice clicks and stuff, not NR or anything like that) which can annoy me from time to time but he's gotten much better about it in the last decade. But generally I think we're lucky that he generally (again with exception) consciously avoids the loudness war and focuses on having dynamics in his mastering.

Even if someone has bettered something Vic has done, his work usually will still hold up excellently on its own merits.

When I see "remastered from the original master tapes by vic anesini" on a disc it usually makes it a must-buy for me.

I enjoy his work on the S&G catalogue in particular. (I have yet to hear the 2 AF discs to compare).
I also enjoy his work on Aerosmith, The Byrds, and Elvis.

I didn't realize until clicking a link on this thread, that he also mastered the original bootleg series discs. Did he do the first master (3 separate cases)?

In the complete studio box set, he did the first two albums. I was lucky enough to get this at a great price, and I grabbed it just for his mastering of Sad Wings of Destiny.

    There is also this collection:

I think if you read some of the Elvis and reissue threads you’ll find that he’s favored within this group.
I, myself, have not heard a remaster of his that I’ve been disappointed with.

I see from the link up thread that he's on the list for mastering the original 1991 Clash On Broadway box. I believe it was remastered, repackaged and reissued around 2000; does anyone know if he was on board for that one?
