Maybe Steven likes West Side Story, maybe if he were making Cats or something than that would be confusing. That said I haven't actually seen Cats or know what the story of Cats is so...
"I'd love to do an old-fashioned musical, where the characters talk to each other and then they sing to each other, I'm such a fan of the Hollywood musical, but I haven't found the right subject matter or the right book or the right music to throw myself into one of them, someday I will." - Steven Spielberg December 2011 http://thefancarpet.com/movie_news/steven-spielberg-wants-to-make-a-musical/ And technically speaking Steven Spielberg has made a Western. In 1958, he became a Boy Scout and fulfilled a requirement for the photography merit badge by making a nine-minute 8 mm film entitled The Last Gunfight.[20] Years later, Spielberg recalled to a magazine interviewer, "My dad's still-camera was broken, so I asked the scoutmaster if I could tell a story with my father's movie camera. He said yes, and I got an idea to do a Western. I made it and got my merit badge

Just saw this, and all I can say is: Don't care if they got a genius like Kushner to write it, and I don't care who they get to choreograph it, or act in it, the movie is iconic and brilliant as it is and I don't see how a contemporary version can better it. Bad bad bad bad idea.
My all time favorite musical ever since I was a kid is apparently being revisited (again!). There's so many different recordings of WSS's music. The latest is Bobby Sanabria's Latin Jazz Big Band recorded live, just released last week and it's a killa! In a FB posting about his record, Sanabria sez that the play's coming back to Broadway AND that Steven Spielberg is going to make a NEW WSS movie. Sanabria went on to say what I immediately thought, I don't see how Spielberg can possibly pull it off. As a WSS fanboy, I'm hoping for greatness, but I wouldn't be surprised if it flopped!
I can hardly wait. I love musicals and I want to see them come back into popularity. I got into watching Bollywood films because they're the only people still making musicals. I'd love to see Spielberg work with the great AR Ramen. (Here's an idea - set it in Mumbai rather than New York and have Maria be Pakistani.)
Um...wasn't E.T. already a sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind? Are you saying one comeback is enough? lol If done correctly I see much that could be good. I loved War of the Worlds, I guess there was just as much griping and moaning then??
Why do I feel if Jennifer Lopez is involved in ANY way the project's doomed? She MIGHT be a good Anita, but than she'd be compared to the incomparable Rita Moreno, and that my friends, would be no contest!
This thing has train wreck possibilities for sure...but Jlo is very talented. Spielberg is still a force to be reckoned with, and with good writing I could see it. Now let us get Ben Affleck in there somewhere! lol
Where are we getting the idea she is involved? JLo is nearly 50, I don't think there's a role for her in this. Though I could see them writing in a grandmother role for Rita Moreno.
