2021's David Bowie box set 5 (Speculation Thread)*

David Bowie’s fourth box set was just announced, but speculation on what will be included in box set #5 is already taking over the release thread for set #4.

I put together a list of what seems possible for the next collection.
Thoughts?

Tin Machine (1 LP)

Sound+Vision tour (2-3 LP)

Tin Machine II (1 LP)

Tin Machine Live: Oy Vey, Baby (1 LP)

Black Tie White Noise (1 LP)

BTWN Remix Compilation (2 LP)
(the bonus disc from the BTWN 2CD/DVD release)

I would be more than happily take that box. No changes from me unless it was to take TM into its own box.

 

That's what I was thinking^. I know many would want their Tin Machine stuff separate from the other Bowie stuff, but then that throws off what to include for the other sets. I'd be perfectly down for that.

 

I speculate that some people will say, "I'm in!'.

I speculate that some people will say, "Wasted opportunity".
I speculate that all of this will happen within 60 seconds of details being released.

 

Heaven's In Here [1989-1994] is the only title I can think of for this set so far.

I like that title but my preference would definitely be a smaller-scale Tin Machine-only box.

Disc 1: Tin Machine
Disc 2: Tin Machine 2
Disc 3: Oy Vey Baby
Disc 4: B-sides, radio sessions and outtakes
Disc 5: DVD/blu-ray of videos and live material. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong but when the first album came out, didn't MTV broadcast some kind of special that consisted of music videos for each of the songs? I kinda vaguely remember this but I don't know if I'm mixing it up with something else.)

Sure, this would break the pattern of the Bowie box sets to date by being smaller and incorporating video but having a band kinda broke the pattern for Bowie anyway. Unlike many others, I loved this era and I'd really like to see it regarded on its own merits rather than incorporated into the already-established reissue program.

 

I agree, the Tin Machine box should be as complete and comprehensive as possible. Every outtake, alternate, demo, etc should be included, starting with the '88 version of Look Back in Anger, which s sort of a precursor to all of the Tin Machine stuff. It would be a mistake to split this up into multiple releases. This should be the TM reissue to end all other TM reissues, and I think it will sell pretty well if it includes plenty of unreleased or rare material. If they follow the format of the other boxes, this will easily be the poorest selling in the series, because a lot of fans will wait for a more comprehensive collection of rarities to appear.

I prefer a separate comprehensive release for Tin Machine. If that happens, the 2019 Bowie collection could be: Black Tie White Noise, Buddha of Saburbia, Outside, and Earthling.

 

Someone mentioned Sound + Vision live might be more likely to appear as a standalone record store day release. I think I like that idea better. It just seems weird to have it in a box next to mostly Tin Machine stuff. To me, that would be like putting the Ziggy Stardust Motion Picture Soundtrack with the new 80s box set.

 

Yes! Although it would be nice if they could fit Hours, since it's the last of the Gabrels era albums. But I realize that would turn this thing into a gargantuan set.

 

I think it would work if the next set includes BTWN, but would be odd if the next set is exclusively Tin Machine, but also features DB: Sound+Vision.
