Contract is for a disc that you can put in a CD player and listen too. Doesn't really matter how it is manufactured. But you can always return it if you aren't happy with the materials I guess.

Was the B&N purchase made on line or a retail store? I wouldn’t expect it in store, mainly because I can’t envision the store carrying two semi obscure catalog titles, regardless of how they’re produced.

  5. That makes a little more sense. BN.com is mostly fulfilled by ImportCDs/Deepdiscount/etc, which have been carrying the major labels' CD-R releases.

Each and every one of us should report this to the better business bureau and inform them of this deceptive bait and switch practice of replacing replicated silver pressed CDs with fake CD-R ripoffs.

At least Amazon has a disclaimer when they do it. I had been looking for a cd of Horace Tapscott’s aiee! The Phantom, which is out of print and was surprised Amazon had it for $12. Right before I bought it, I noticed in tiny print under editorial reviews:
“When sold by Amazon.com, this product will be manufactured on demand using CD-R media. Amazon.com’s standard return policy will apply.”
Fortunately have since found a used one in the bins. BTW, one of the best jazz albums of the 1990s imo.

  8. The offending companies who contaminate the market with CD-Rs must think it's fine to deceive potential buyers by offering substandard/burned discs in sleeves that indicate you are buying an authentic and genuine factory pressed disc.

The authentic factory pressed CD sleeves will have a few pointers to indicate authenticity and legality, like a barcode/cat./matrix number/date of manufacture/country of manufacture etc. printed somewhere on the package. When you look at the inner hub of a CD-R you will never see any of these confirmations.

These deceptive companies are never behind the wall when it comes to informing you the disc is a remaster or is in mono/stereo, or has extra tracks etc but they play a different game with buyers when it comes to this carry on.

I can't remember the title, but a movie I ordered came in on a dvd-r. Might have been dvd+r. (For all I know, it could have been dvd×r or even dvd÷r.:p)

I've recorded local musicians who wanted to sell their music, and duplicated albums onto cd-r for them to sell - complete with tray card and single fold booklet. Some would reorder as they were running out of product. A few recordings were sent out for pressing. Usually a run of 1000.

I thought that one "gun shy" artist would hit the 1000 mark eventually. I wanted to go ahead and send it out for a pressing run betting it would hit 1k, but my partner nix it. Within a few months, I had burned as many.

It was quite a while back, but as I recall, for me, it was at about 200 cd-rs that the price was competitive to justify pressing. But from a record company standpoint, think of the storage space required for so many copies of so many titles. (I not saying I agree with them releasing on cd-r, I'm just saying.)

Do a chargeback through your credit card or threaten them that you will do so. This is consumer fraud.

False. There is a difference between a cd and a cdr. That's why one is called a "cd" and the other is a "cdr".

I just had a third party seller on Amazon sell me an Amazon CDR so I mailed it back with the prepaid mailer. Scam!

Gotta keep an eye on the tricky criminals at Amazon. Sometimes that disclaimer is not there and it is a cdr. Check the Product Details section for "afw" - that also means cdr.

I agree with @Steve Martin that the issue is not as cut and dried as we might like - and make no mistake, I detest these official CD-Rs, would never knowingly buy one, and would do everything in my power to return or get a refund if I ever happened to receive one.

But if the disc is officially licensed/authorized, has the music that it's supposed to have, and conforms to the redbook standard to earn the "Compact Disc Digital Audio" logo on it, then it's very difficult to argue that fraud is involved.

That said, customers have become accustomed to properly pressed CDs for 35 years now, and it's no accident that Amazon includes their "manufactured on demand as a CD-R" disclaimer - everyone knows that consumers expect a factory pressed CD, and a lot of consumers also know that CD-Rs are not as durable or long-lasting as pressed CDs.

So I don't think official CD-Rs are fraud, but I do think they are an inferior product and I think that's why in most cases it's dead-easy to return them - and in cases where a vendor won't take a return or issue a refund, I imagine that a buyer would have pretty good luck getting their credit card company or PayPal to help them out.

My one exception, I would take a CD-R from tmtomh because I know it would be the best sounding version.

Of course, that's the great paradox - anyone we'd have enough confidence in to accept a CD-R from, would never send us one anyway. :p

Why are people referring to some CDs as "pressed?" No CDs are pressed - that's a term that only has relevance to vinyl
    .
As far as CDs, there are CDrs and glass-mastered CDs, the latter presumably being what some people are talking about with "pressed" CDs?

I believe it is fraud. A cd is not the same thing as a cd-r.

"Compact disc (CD) is a digital optical disc data storage format that was co-developed by Philips and Sony and released in 1982. The format was originally developed to store and play only sound recordings (CD-DA) but was later adapted for storage of data (CD-ROM). Several other formats were further derived from these, including write-once audio and data storage (CD-R), rewritable media (CD-RW), Video Compact Disc (VCD), Super Video Compact Disc (SVCD), Photo CD, PictureCD, CD-i, and Enhanced Music CD.

I picked up a used copy of Dan Fogelberg's “Love In Time” on CD-R. I’m not sure if it was ever released on a standard CD.

    CDs > 16/44.1 downloads > CD-Rs

Basically, if I can't buy a "properly" manufactured CD for a given album I would rather buy the download (assuming it's CD quality or higher) than a CD-R in crappy packaging.

Yeah, especially when you can make your own CD-R and crappy packaging for next to nothing.

I found this in the $2 box yesterday and thought "West German with a white face, never saw this before." It wasn't after I got back to the office when I saw the CD-R indicators and the green tinged disc under better lighting.

Enlightening thread. I didn't know it had gotten this far. Sad state of affairs. I too was recently burned (pun intended) on an album not specifically stated as being a CD-R. There was no mention of it being burned on demand. I'm sure it's all about the money. If it's cheap for us to burn a CD than it has to be equally cheap for the "record company". I suppose they figured the consumer would blissfully pay wine prices for beer. Not so. Not me.
