I need a good introductory record for The Cure. I know that I like more of the rock stuff instead of the more produced sound of Disintegration. I'm thinking maybe Seventeen Seconds, Head On The Door, or Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me; but I've only listened to parts of those online. I need some direction!

Either Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me or Head On The Door would be good. Both great albums.

My issue is one The Cure album puts you in an awkward position since the early work is so much different than the later work, at least in terms of what they're going for musically - I really liked Faith and anything after Pornography will have enough tracks to hook you into the records, anything before and you have to work at it. The first album is pretty easy stuff but the trilogy that came is pretty tough on a single level so I'd pick those off with actual listens, they also kept them to around 40 minutes, which is my biggest problem once they had the chart success.

If you gonna listen to The Cure, you should also take a listen to Siouxsie & the Banshees :)

As has been mentioned, there is a thread on this already. Since you mention being interested in their more rock material, I would suggest Wish which I think is their heaviest. Their self-titled The Cure is also more in that vein.

It may be considered sacrilege by Cure diehards, and I do have some of their original albums, but I am content with the compilations: Standing on a Beach and Galore.

This is the way I entered the wonderful world of the Cure. Head On The Door started it off and I've loved 'em ever since.

Maybe a good place to start is the compilation Standing On The Beach. It provides a pretty good overview of the band and you can decide which direction to go from there. Great comp!

I started with Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me when that came out. I then bought Head On The Door. Worked my way back to the beginning and have bought everything that came out after. Have to say I love them all, but those two albums and Disintegration are still my favorites.

Post-"Disintegration"-Cure can't really be recommended, can it? Especially to starters.

It certainly is, but it might not be the best entry point for a new fan.

Of the studio albums, I’d say ‘Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me’ is a good place to start due to the variety of sounds and moods from one track to the next. But there’s also nothing wrong with ‘Standing on a Beach’ and ‘Galore’ as starting points.

If your just getting into the one of the best bands in the universe then you MUST, MUST, MUST, get the DVD/BLU RAY of The Cure live in Berlin `TRILOGY`; playing through three of their albums in the entirety, THE CURE are totally on top of their game, there are moments in this where you get goosebumps from the sheer beauty of the music and lyrics.
This is a poor quality sample but the whole concert is on the `Tube` if you look.

"I will kiss you, I will kiss you
I will kiss you forever on nights like this
I will kiss you, I will kiss you
    And we shall be together".

I would suggest to begin with Standing on A Beach.
But as you seem to like rock i would also suggest three imaginary boys (deluxe édition) where you could listen to the amazing Michael Dempsey’s bass lines.
This is mostly power pop/post punk Music i like to make sport while listening.

I'd also throw my support behind the Standing on a Beach compilation. It was my introduction, and all I heard of theirs for years before diving deeper into their discography. There's a lot of great tracks on there that really emphasise the development of their sound from the early, post-punk days, to the darker stuff, and then veering into alt-pop territory.
